If Tuesday’s National League Wild Card is any indication on how Wednesday’s game will go, then strap up the boots we’re in for one hell of a game. The Athletics are traveling to New York and are using the bullpen game approach with Liam Hendriks likely the one opening the game for Oakland. Hendriks has been lights out for the A’s lately throwing 10.1 scoreless innings over his last 10 outings. The thing about Hendriks is how poor his home and away splits are. He was lights out at home, but his away stats are UGLY allowing his opponents to hit .325 as he’s posted a 7.45 ERA to boot. The Yankees are using an actual starter, although questionable, in Luis Severino . It’s been a tale of two halves for Severino. After his 2.31 ERA in the first half, he’s been dreadful since the All-Star break notching a 5.57 ERA. The silver lining is that he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs over his last three starts and has struck out at least five batters in each. Severino has made two starts against Oakland this year and there has been mixed results as he has a win and a loss against them.

We don’t have much BvP against Severino or Hendriks, but Jed Lowrie is 6-for-11 off of Severino during his career. Khris Davis , Jed Lowrie , Matt Chapman , Stephen Piscotty and Matt Olson all had 390 at-bats against right-handed pitching this year and everyone of them had at least a .360 wOBA. Stephen Piscotty and Ramon Laureano are the A’s hottest hitters as both have north of a .300 AVG last 10 games.

Greg Bird was left off of the Yankees roster in favor of Babe Ruth...I mean Luke Voit . Voit hit .326 with a .440 wOBA versus right-handers. Giancarlo Stanton is riding a seven-game hit streak and has hit three home runs over his last three games. Since his return to the field, Aaron Judge played 12 games for the Yankees, hitting just .220 with ONE home run. One last thing; it’s Aaron Hicks ’ birthday, if you’re into those types of narratives.

Something worth noting, the Athletics bullpen finished the regular season with the third best ERA in baseball and the Yankees finished with the fourth best. Only the Rays bullpen had more wins than the Oakland’s this year as well. Just some food for thought.
