Chicago Cubs @ St. Louis Cardinals

Cubs -110

Game Total: 8

Friday Night’s game between the Cubs and Cardinals will be the third series that the two teams have played in this season. The first series that was supposed to be four games turned out to be two due to a couple of weather postponements. The Cards are 4-1 against the Cubs and have their sweep of the team residing in Chicago fresh on their minds. The Cubs, however, are 2.5 games ahead of the Cards in the NL Central standings, so this is a big June series for both teams.

Game Play Predictions

Chicago Cubs

  • The Cubs have been locked in against right-handed pitching this year, which is what they’re getting with Michael Wacha opposing them.

  • Wacha has yet to lose at home this season going 5-0 with a 1.85 ERA compared to a 3.54 mark on the road.

  • That said, currently rostered Cubs’ have a slash line of .315/.373/.613 against him.

  • Anthony Rizzo has posted the most gaudy numbers out of all of the Cubs off of Wacha with 18 hits in 40 at-bats (.450 AVG) and two of those hits have been homers.

  • Against right-handed pitching, the Cubs rank seventh in both OPS and wOBA.

  • Chicago is tied for the ninth lowest K-rate (21.3-percent) against RHP this season.

  • Albert Almora , the likely leadoff hitter for the Cubs tonight, is hitting .307 against RHP which leads the team amongst all regular’s.

  • Jason Heyward has arguably been the Cubs best hitter since the calendar flipped to June posting a .298 AVG and .341 wOBA.

  • Kris Bryant hasn’t hit a home run since May 14th, a span of 24 games. He’s hit two off Michael Wacha in his career.

St. Louis Cardinals

  • The Cardinals haven’t had nearly the same amount of success against Jon Lester as the Cubs have had against Wacha hitting just .238 in 189 combined at-bats.

  • Lester has allowed one earned run or less in six of his last seven starts and has allowed two earned runs over 11.1 innings against the Cards in two starts this season.

  • Jedd Gyorko has had the most success against Lester among all Cards players going 9-for-22 (.409) with three bombs and a 1.364 OPS.

  • St. Louis ranks 26th in AVG but 15th in OPS versus left-handed pitching this season.

  • Over his last 10 games, Jose Martinez is slashing .472/.525/.944 with five homers, 11 runs scored and 11 runs batted in.

  • It’s likely we see a Harrison Bader , Marcell Ozuna and Tommy Pham outfield in this spot as all three players are hitting over .300 off of southpaws this season and all three have wOBA’s of at least .386.

  • If for some reason the Cards decide to go with Dexter Fowler over one of the aforementioned players, Fowler’s hitting .088 with a .168 wOBA off of LHP this season.

  • St. Louis as a team has only belted 19 homers off of LHP total this season, ranking them tied for 19th in the league.

  • St. Louis has been the toughest team to strikeout when facing left-handed pitching on the year as they’ve struck out a league low 118 times.
