The MLB Injury Report is officially in high gear as 22 different players landed on the 10-day IL just last week. On top of that, you have your typical day-to-day injuries to monitor as well as trying to figure out who is coming back. So let’s just get right to it.

On the10-Day IL

Aaron Judge , OF NYY – The big guy suffered an oblique strain late last week and after an MRI, the Yankees and fantasy owners are looking at an absence that will likely extend to the end of May. Manager Aaron Boone called it a “pretty significant strain” so it’s going to be a while before he even starts swinging a bat. Time to tuck him away on your IL and hope for the best.

Greg Bird , 1B NYY – This is just downright depressing, isn’t it? For the last three years we’ve been hearing about how great his swing is and how he could be a better overall hitter than some of the biggest names in MLB, yet this guy is as frail as it gets. Seriously, a stiff breeze could break him in half. The latest calamity is a strained plantar fascia and the foot issue is expected to keep him out for 4-to-6 weeks which puts him back in mid-May. If you have the IL space, then you can stash him, but if not, you may as well dump him as he seems destined to never live up to his potential.

Austin Meadows , OF TB – What a bummer, right? The guy was off to an amazing start to the season and now he’s out injured with a sprained thumb he got sliding head-first into third. The Rays ran extensive tests on him and deemed that surgery was not necessary, but they still expect him to miss three or four weeks. That puts him back around mid-May.

Nathan Eovaldi , SP BOS – After a run of tests on Eovaldi’s elbow, the Red Sox and his doctors conceded to surgery to remove loose bodies from the elbow. The recovery time is roughly 6-to-8 weeks, so it looks like a mid-June return. If there’s room to stash him, you can, but I’d be dumping him if it takes up a roster spot. No telling what his condition will be upon returning.

Eduardo Núñez , 2B BOS – The Red Sox put the veteran on the IL with a strained back, but already, the reports are coming back positive regarding his recovery. He’ll likely miss the rest of this week, but barring any setbacks, he should be good to go next week.

Dustin Pedroia , 2B BOS – He’s back with the team right now and did some light running between Tuesday’s doubleheader. The Sox are hoping to have him back at the beginning of next week, but truthfully…who really wants him as their fantasy second baseman? You have to be in a seriously deep, 20-team league to even consider him, let alone actually use him.

Lucas Giolito , SO CHW – The White Sox placed Giolito on the IL with a hamstring strain fairly quickly and have been monitoring his progress closely. He threw 25 pitches from flat ground on Tuesday and is slated for a bullpen session Friday. If everything goes well, he could be back as early as Monday of next week.

Christin Stewart , OF DET – The initial thought was that Stewart would only need the minimal time on the IL after suffering a quad strain two weekends ago. However, the progress he’s made has been minimal and he still hasn’t resumed baseball activities. It’s now sounding like he may not be ready until the first week of May. Keep tracking him as the Tigers could really use that bat in their lineup.

Tyler Skaggs , SP LAA – The Angels have been watching Skaggs closely in his return from a sprained ankle, but are clearly not going to rush his progress. He threw a 40-pitch side session this past weekend which apparently went well, but the Angels want him to complete at least one more bullpen session before determining his next step which would likely be a minor league rehab start. Next week is a possibility, but the team is really being cautious.

Freddy Peralta , SP MIL – The Brewers were pretty quick to place Peralts on the IL when his shoulder started to bother him, but things do seem to be trending in the right direction for him. He threw a light 15-pitch side session Monday and reported no problems. He was re-examined and the Brewers are now thinking that, if he gets through one more session this week without issue, they’ll activate him next week for a home start against the Rockies.

Marco Estrada , SP OAK – The A’s placed Estrada on the IL early last week with a back strain and are waiting to see how long he really needs to be out. There are some reports saying he could miss a month and others saying he could be back late next week. There has been no word as to his recovery schedule, but you have to assume that if he hasn’t started throwing yet, it could be on the longer side of him being out. Stay tuned for more reports as they come in.

Scott Kingery, SS PHI – The Phillies have been calling it a mild hamstring injury since it happened, but there may be some concern as they never announced the results of his MRI. Th eteam doesn’t seem overly-concerned right now, so perhaps it really is mild and, if that’s the case, he should be back at the start of next week. Stay tuned for more information.

Starling Marte , OF PIT – After an outfield collision with teammate Erik González , Marte was carted off the field and placed on the IL with what the team is calling an abdominal and quad issue. There is not clear timetable for his return, but Pirates Director of Sports Medicine, Todd Tomczyk, said that the outfielder would be sidelined for more than just the minimum 10 days. Once the soreness subsides and Marte is able to resume baseball activities, we’ll know more about his eventual return date.

Erik González , SS PIT – The collision with Starling Marte left Gonzalez with a fractured collarbone and he landed on the 60-day DL, not even just the 10-day. He may not require surgery, but the Pirates don’t anticipate his return to come until at least the end of June. He can and should be dropped in all formats.

Michael Wacha , SP STL – The right-hander landed on the IL with right knee patellar tendinitis, but the team doesn’t believe he will miss more than one or two starts. He’ll throw a side-session towards the end of this week, and if everything goes well, he could be activated by the end of the weekend. The beginning of next week might be a more realistic timetable, but we’ll wait to hear what the reports are.

Matt Shoemaker , SP TOR – After pitching lights-out to open the season, Shoemaker suffered a torn ACL during his last outing and he is now done for the season. What more can you say? He gone!

Day-to-Day

Mike Moustakas , 2B MIL – Not sure how it’s being handled, but Moustakas suffered a small fracture in the tip of his finger. However, the Brewers don’t feel like this will affect his batting or fielding and are call him day-to-day right now. He’s missed the last two games, but was able to take bating practice Tuesday. The team will make a determination Wednesday morning to see how the finger felt after the session and a night’s rest.

Hunter Dozier , 3B KC – He left the last game with back spasms and was out of the lineup again Tuesday. He may not miss much more time though if everything feels ok, so look for him to return for this weekend’s series.

On the Mend

Jacob deGrom , SP NYM – There was fear that the Mets would be stupid and not send deGrom for an MRi on his elbow, but they apparently learned from past mistakes and gave him one which, thankfully, came back clean. He is expected to return as soon as his 10 days are up which means he’ll return by the end of this week. He is slated to face the Brewers which is a tough match-up given the lefties in their lineup, but if he’s ready to go, you should get him back in there.

Blake Snell , SP TB – One of these days we’ll compile a list of the dumbest injury excuses and what really happened, because this story just isn’t believable. Who gets out of the shower and then decides to move the vanity in their bathroom? No, seriously. You’re in a towel, you’re getting ready to go out, but hey, let’s pull everything off the counter and everything out from under the sink to move this vanity over? Come on. Nevertheless, it was a broken toe for the reigning al Cy Young but after a bullpen session Tuesday went well, they are likely to activate him this week.

Jean Segura , SS PHI – Segura hit the IL early last week with a hamstring issue, but the Phillies are very excited about the progress he’s made. The latest reports say he could be activated as early as Saturday, so if you’re in a league with daily roster moves, you should check back on his status Friday and see if he’s good to go.

Rougned Odor , 2B TEX – He land on the IL with a right knee sprain on April 13, but has taken part in both hitting and fielding drills as recently as Monday. The Rangers will continue to monitor his status, but it appears as if he’s set to return to the lineup this coming weekend.

Harrison Bader , OF STL – the young outfielder landed on the IL with a strained hamstring, but the Cardinals believe he won’t need a rehab outing and are apparently willing to activate him as early as tomorrow (Wednesday). He should slot right back into centerfield with Dexter Fowler moving back over to right field to platoon with José Martínez .

Tyler O’Neill, OF STL – O’Neill landed on the IL with a right elbow nerve subluxation, but the Cardinals don’t believe the issue to be too serious. However, they would like him to go on a rehab assignment just to err on the side of caution. He headed down to Double-A Springfield on Tuesday and should be back within a few days baring any setbacks.

Chris Iannetta , C COL – The Rockies put him on the IL last Monday with a lat strain but are expecting him to be ready to return by the end of this week. He’ll have to go through some throwing and hitting drills over the next couple of days, but if everything shakes out well, he could do a rehab start Thursday or Friday and be back to the bigs by the weekend.
