Will Smith Headshot

Smith will be temporarily shut down with elbow inflammation, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area Sports reports.

The positive news is that the MRI came back clean and manager Bruce Bochy is confident his reliever will be ready for opening day. The Giants plan to have Smith make six appearances before the season opener, but will likely exercise caution with the lefty. The 27-year-old made 26 appearances with San Francisco after being acquired at the trade deadline, posting a 2.95 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.

Mark Stone Headshot

Stone (neck) is doubtful to play Friday, but might suit up against the Panthers on Sunday, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen reports.

Stone has garnered 12 points in his last 10 outings, including a five-point explosion versus the Maple Leafs, which makes his absence from the lineup a significant blow to both fans and fantasy owners. While the winger is out, Tom Pyatt will likely see the biggest uptick in ice time on the Sens' top line.

Joel Bolomboy Headshot

Bolomboy was assigned to the D-League's Salt Lake City Stars on Wednesday.

Bolomboy has now bounced back and forth between the Jazz and the Salt Lake City Stars 15 times this season in what's been mostly a developmental year for the rookie. The 6-9 Bolomboy participated in the D-League All-Star Game in New Orleans over All-Star Weekend.

Mark Giordano Headshot

Giordano netted the game-winner in overtime Tuesday for a 6-5 road win over the Predators.

The Toronto native was not about to be left out of a high-scoring affair, also providing a secondary helper on the game's first goal. Giordano puts icing on the cake for his fantasy owners based on his team-leading plus-14 rating and three shorthanded points through 60 contests. It's tough to envision a fantasy league setup where Giordano wouldn't be useful.

Michal Neuvirth Headshot

Neuvirth will tend the twine for Wednesday night's showdown with the Capitals, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

With one disastrous outing against the Oilers aside, Neuvirth's play has been solid lately, though his defense has definitely played a role in that -- the Czech goalie has allowed two goals or fewer while facing 24 shots or fewer in his last three outings, not including the Edmonton game. The Capitals rank 17th in the NHL with 29.8 shots per game, but they're still no strangers to scoring as they currently rank second in the league with 3.34 goals per game. Neuvirth will likely need his slumping offense to step up if he wants to get the victory on Wednesday.
12:23 pm (EST)
Bryn Forbes Headshot

Forbes was assigned to the D-League's Austin Spurs on Wednesday.

The NBA team is off the schedule until Friday against the Clippers, so Forbes will head to the Spurs' D-League affiliate to take part in their game Thursday against the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Forbes is averaging a team-best 22.9 points to go with 3.2 rebounds, 2.7 three-pointers, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals in 36.3 minutes per game over his 13 appearances with Austin on the season.
12:22 pm (EST)
Bryan Mitchell Headshot

Mitchell will be one of five pitchers vying for the last two spots in the starting rotation, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.

Mitchell suffered a toe injury in spring training last year that held him out for the better part of the season, but once healthy he pitched solely as a starter, working to a 3.24 ERA over five starts. With the top three spots seemingly accounted for, the 25-year-old righty will compete with Luis Cessa, Luis Severino, Chad Green, and Adam Warren for one of the remaining spots. Should Mitchell lose out, it's possible the Yankees will send him back down to the minors to stay stretched out as a starter, but he's also had some experience as a reliever and could be deployed in a long-relief role in the big league bullpen.
12:21 pm (EST)
Willy Hernangomez Headshot

Hernangomez will start at center Thursday against the Cavaliers, Ian Begley of reports.

There was some thought that Joakim Noah (hamstring) would return to action Thursday following an extra week of recovery due to the All-Star break, but Noah apparently aggravated the injury last week and hasn't fully recovered. Until the veteran resumes practicing and receives clearance to play again, it looks like the Knicks will lean on Hernangomez as their primary option at center. During Noah's five-game absence, the rookie has averaged 9.0 points, 9.0 boards, 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals in 22.8 minutes per game and is shooting 54.5 percent from the field.
12:18 pm (EST)
Alex Dickerson Headshot

Dickerson (back) was held out of workouts for a third straight day Wednesday and will be examined by team doctors, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

What was initially thought to be a fairly minor ailment seems to be sticking around longer than expected, so the young outfielder will head to the trainer's table to see if there's a larger problem presenting itself. Back injuries are always a rough time given how much every baseball activity utilizes the back, but the severity of this particular issue is currently unclear. Once the results of the examination are revealed, a timetable for Dickerson's return to spring training should become clearer.
12:14 pm (EST)
Greg Bird Headshot

Bird is expected to be the team's starting first baseman, Mike Mazzeo of the New York Daily News reports.

Following the retirement of Mark Teixeira at the conclusion of last season, Bird appeared to have the inside track to take over at first base and it appears he still maintains that edge despite the late offseason signing of Chris Carter. Bird missed all of 2016 with a shoulder injury and though he was only able to participate in the Arizona Fall League as a DH, the 24-year-old is heading into spring training fully healthy and with no restrictions.
