The 49ers traded up with the Chiefs to select Stanford G Josh Garnett with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. The 49ers gave up a fourth and a sixth round pick this year to move up from the No. 37 overall pick. Garnett earned the 2015 Outland Trophy as the nation's top interior lineman. Once Garnett is under contract, the 49ers will have locked up their entire 2016 draft class.
Taylor was cut by Cleveland at the end of camp last year and it has taken a while for him to resurface due to chronic knee issues. The former first-round pick has been good against the run when healthy but obviously his knee is still a major issue that continues to linger.
Alex Dickerson left Friday's game after a collision with Jankowski in left center. He hurt his hip on the play. If this issue lingers the DL could be the destination of Dickerson, but hopefully the injury isn't serious. Christian Bethancourt will take over in left.
The Rangers have also expressed interest in Jeremy Hellickson, though he appears to be a fallback option if they can't obtain Velasquez. The Rangers had several scouts on hand Friday, watching Velasquez pitch well in a loss to the Braves. Velasquez has a 3.34 ERA on the season with the Phillies in 91.2 innings pitched in 2016.
Even with his velocity being down due to a back issue, Estrada racked up six strikeouts on the night. The Orioles got to him early, with a two-run double from Mark Trumbo in the first inning, but the right-hander was able to settle in nicely afterwards. He has been tremendous for the Jays this season, registering a 3.02 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 108/42 K/BB ratio across 116 1/3 innings. Next up for Estrada is the Astros in Houston on Wednesday.
Cervelli exited in the 8th inning after being hit by a pitch. He had just returned from the DL 10 days ago. Cervelli had to be helped off the field after going down with a foot injury.
Reyes was diagnosed with a Grade 1 intercostal strain on Tuesday afternoon and is still dealing with some discomfort. Mets manager Terry Collins was not considering a DL stint at first due to the club having a string of games in American League parks next week that would have allowed Reyes to DH. This didn't make sense as the veteran infielder suffered the injury on a swing. It is now likely that Reyes is headed for the DL.
Hazen said the plan is to continue the pregame work at different positions other than second base. It's likely that the Red Sox will introduce outfield into the practice sessions in the near future. There is still the possibility Moncada will see game action at one of the alternate positions. If a permanent switch is made it will likely take place during the offseason. Moncada entered Friday hitting .270 with a .902 OPS with Double-A Portland.
Ziegler struggled on Thursday, blowing a save in the ninth inning in the opening game against the Angels. Matt Barnes would get the call should the Red Sox have a save situation in the ninth.
