Last Season’s Fantasy Highlights

There were not that many highlights for the Rangers in 2014. Leonys Martin proved he is a bona fide roto-speedster as he swiped 30+ for the second year in a row while raising his average .014 points. Adrian Beltre proved he is still very good, hitting .295+ for the 5th straight year (albeit while hitting only 19 homers while knocking in only 77 runners). On the pitching side, Derek Holland missed most of the year but when he returned, he posted strong ratios and threw 92 mph showing he is fully recovered.

What Has Changed?

Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo return after injury marred seasons to give the Rangers offense a boost. Not much else is new in Arlington. On the pitching side, the Rangers added Yovani Gallardo to bolster the rotation and should have both Derek Holland and Colby Lewis for the whole season.

What to Expect:

Expect the Rangers to be better on offense with Fielder, Choo and Moreland returning from injury. Those three should get a bunch of RBI opportunities with Martin and Elvis Andrus setting the table and stealing bases to get into scoring position. The pitching staff will be better (though still not great) but at least Neftali Feliz will enter the year healthy and should hold down the 9th inning as he did before they messed him up by trying to move him to the rotation.

This Year’s Surprise:

Many will shy away from Yovani Gallardo because Texas is a tough place to pitch, the AL is a tougher place to pitch than the NL and his Ks are well below his 200+ heyday. Gallardo will surprise and be a solid starter in AL-only leagues. Why? The answer is because the strikeouts have gone down in large part because of a change of approach. Gallardo now induces ground balls more than 50 percent of the time – a skill that will serve him well in Texas. Plus, remember that Gallardo has been a consistent performer in the major leagues – his ERA has been under 4 every year but one since he was 21 years old.
