Last week we told you about changes in store for NBA All-Star weekend. Instead of the rookies taking on the sophomores in the "futures" game, the best 1st and 2nd year players will be split up. Taking a cue from the NHL, the NBA will draft the squads, with Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley doing the honors. Does the NBA have the best All-Star game among major sports? MLB may still be the best, but what we do know is that the Pro Bowl remains horrible.
The NBA All-Star game voting is over and the starters have been announced. On Thursday, prior to the TNT doubleheader, the NBA will announce the reserve players for the Eastern and Western Conferences for the mid-season classic. We are only a week short of the midway point of the abbreviated 66 game season and what better time to identify the leaders in the race for the annnual awards. While many players of this caliber are rarely available on the waiver wire or in free agency in fantasy leagues, we list ownership percentages in Flea Flicker leagues... just in case!
For the most part, the NBA taking a break for Super Sunday. Only a pair of games today both long before kickoff in Indianapolis. Memphis is at the Boston Garden at Noon with Miami hosting Toronto at 1pm. With a slow day in the Association, we share some of the NBA's hottest players per fantasy category to help you gague your needs. Happy Super Sunday!
The starters for the NBA All-Star game were announced last night, but I always find the reserves more interesting. The NBA along with TNT will announce the reserves for the Eastern and Western Conference on Thursday night, but we don't want to wait. Just as the coaches will do next week, we will add seven reserves for each conference. Chances are you these guys won't be available in your league, but we list availability in Flea Flicker leagues, just in case.
The NBA season is less than six weeks old, but its already time to announce the All-Star game starters. The names will be unveiled tonight LIVE during a one hour special on TNT at 7pm EST. Shaq, Charles, Kenny and Ernie will do the honors prior to the Thursday night doubleheader. The Bulls and Knicks tip off at eight, followed by the Nuggets and Clippers. *** SPOILER ALERT ***
How are injuries impacting your fantasy team? I picked up then Los Angeles Clippers shooting guard Eric Gordon, cheap at my auction. When the bidding ended, I heard hushed mentions of "he's injured again". Well, he wasn't injured at that point, but has been ever since. Just yesterday, I lost Washington Wizards power forward Andray Blatche for three-to-five weeks. This is the case of an injury helping you, at least in the short term. I was able to pickup versatile Boris Diaw of Charlotte. In my league, he qualifes at center and forward and is coming off a 20 point, 10 assist game.
Although we are still in January, we have a pretty fair idea who will be competing to bring home the NBA crown this Spring. The East will come down to Orlando and Chicago. Philadelphia is off to a tremendous start, but can't compete with the Magic or Bulls in a seven game series. In the West, Oklahoma City, defending champion Dallas and the two terrors in Los Angeles appear to be the favorites. Like the Sixers in the East, Denver is off to a terrific start, but cannot expect to outlast the Lakers, Clippers, Mavericks or Thunder in an extended series.
When competing in Fantasy Basketball or in any Fantasy sport for that matter, injuries are the biggest factor. Trading and proficiency in working the wavier wire and free agency also contribute towards fantasy success. Other than your talent staying healthy, the most important aspect in managing your fantasy roster is success in your draft or auction. Just like the stock market, acquiring assets at a price lower than value equates winning.
As we roll towards February and the All-Star break, NBA clubs are looking to make adjustments. Most clubs still have hope of making the post season, while a few may already be tinkering with the future in mind. A one time NBA All-Star may finally be emerging from free agency and trade rumors are rampant. Those looking for a center find one on the market after already being traded once this season.
What is the future of the NBA? MLB has the futures game, football has various All-Star games, including Saturday's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. The Association features the Rookie Challenge, held during All-Star weekend. This is the 13th edition of the Rookie Challenge which historically has matched the league's top rookies against the best 2nd year players. Just in case you were wondering, the sophomore's have won eight times, but the rookie's have won the last two. Washington's John Wall was the MVP of last year's 148-140 shootout.
