Blake Treinen Headshot

Treinen's adjustment to ninth-inning duties could be made easier by having Matt Wieters, who has plenty of experience catching for closers that rely on their sinker, behind the plate, Barry Svrluga of The Washington Post reports.

Wieters formed late-inning batteries with both Zach Britton and Jim Johnson in Baltimore, and Treinen's 95 mph sinker is comparable to Britton's overpowering offering. In fact, one of the first questions Nats GM Mike Rizzo asked the backstop before signing him was, "How do sinker-ballers attack the ninth?" If Wieters can help Treinen gain the same level of confidence in his primary pitch that Britton now enjoys, any potential closer controversy in Washington could be put to rest very quickly.
Jeanmar Gómez Headshot

Jeanmar Gomez will get the opportunity to regain the closers job from Hector Neris, according to manager Pete Mackanin.

He was a solid closer for the first five months of last season, before losing the job when he faltered in September. He did rack up 37 saves but his ERA blew up by nearly two runs between August 31 (2.97 ERA) and September 29 (4.85 ERA). It should prove to be an intriguing spring training with Gomez and Neris competing for the closer role on the Phillies, but this kind of news makes drafting your fantasy team that more difficult.
Santiago Casilla Headshot

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Santiago Casilla has been removed from the closers role.

Added 09/19/16 10:36 am (EST)   Source
With four runs allowed and two blown saves over his last four appearances (2.1 innings), it was an easy decision for Bochy to make. While the manager normally affords his veterans far too much rope, Casilla has been one of those players on the bubble given his sometimes erratic performance. Hunter Strickland and Derek Law are the two primary choices to fill in, but don't be shocked if perhaps Sergio Romo finds his way into the committee. You also shouldn't be too shocked if Casilla regains the job at any point with a few strong outing put together. About all you can count on is that it will be a group earning saves, not just one reliever.
Tyler Clippard Headshot

Tyler Clippard will get the first crack at the Diamondbacks closers job.

Added 07/13/16 5:47 pm (EST)   Source
After the trade of Brad Ziegler, the Diamondbacks are in need of a closer. Though Daniel Hudson was expected to get the job, Clippard has gotten it instead. Clippard has posted a 2.97 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 41 strikeouts over 33.1 innings pitched this season. He also has 13 holds and two blown saves.
Carter Capps Headshot

Marlins to have open competition for the closers role between Carter Capps and A.J. Ramos.

Added 01/24/16 8:29 am (EST)   Source
The Marlins are heading into 2016 with a solid bullpen which could turn into a great thing for them. They will give both Capps and Ramos a chance to win the closer position after Ramos served the role in 2015. Capps with his hard throwing and funky windup and release is a flamethrower that has a chance to take the job from Ramos.
Edward Mujica Headshot

Edward Mujica may be taken out of the Athletics closers role.

Added 08/09/15 10:32 pm (EST)   Source
Mujica took over the role for recently traded Tyler Clippard, but fell apart Sunday giving up three hits and three runs all coming on a Colby Rasmus home run. After being DFA'd by Boston, Mujica has a 3.60 ERA in 20 innings of work for the Athletics, including just one save.

Dellin Betances Headshot

Manager Joe Girardi is leaning towards using both Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller as closers.

Added 04/03/15 11:18 am (EST)   Source
Leaning towards? So we're still at square-one here. Girardi may play the match-ups at first, but he is most likely going to lean on Betances to get the job done. That's not to say that Miller won't see opportunities when the situation calls for a lefty, but Betances should eventually earn this role all to himself. For now, consider him the primary target in your draft with a nice late-round handcuff to Miller.
Jenrry Mejia Headshot

Jenrry Mejia will have the opportunity to keep the closers role if he is "lights out" in early April.

Added 02/21/15 1:55 pm (EST)   Source
Not like they are placing any pressure on the kid. Bobby Parnell is due to come back early in the season, so this could be a bullpen in transition if Mejia is not exactly "lights out" in April. Draft accordingly.
Dellin Betances Headshot

Yankees manager joe Girardi is open to utilizing both Dellin Betances and newly signed Andrew Miller as closers to start the season.

How many times are reporters going to ask Girardi this question? He was asked just last week and while he gave a similar answer, he also said that he would prefer to have just one guy in the role. We expect Betances to do the majority of the work in the ninth inning. Should there be a situation where a lefty might be better suited, then perhaps Miller will get the shot. But it is not going to be a full-on platoon here.
Jason Grilli Headshot

Jason Grilli has been removed from the closers role.

Added 06/20/14 1:59 pm (EST)   Source
There was some who wondered if Grilli was going to get his closer job back at all once he returned from the DL due to the effectiveness of Mark Melancon. With Grilli\'s continues struggles Melancon will once again take over as the Pirates closer and should be added in all formats.
