After giving up four earned runs over his first 1.1 innings this spring, Davis has now turned in consecutive scoreless outings. He missed some time last season due to a flexor strain, but if Davis stays healthy in 2017, he should post a lot of saves for a Cubs team that won 103 games last year.

Davis' performance Sunday certainly couldn't have been the spring debut he was hoping for. He began his outing with a lead off walk and then went on to allow three consecutive hits before being taken out. The Cubs will be hoping Davis, who missed much of last season with elbow issues, can knock off the rust soon considering that they brought him in to replace Aroldis Chapman as their closer.

Koji Uehara is in the same boat, while the Cubs are also limiting the work of their starters in the wake of a World Series title last season, and in anticipation of another postseason run in 2017. Davis will likely make six-to-eight appearances between now and the end of the Cactus League schedule. As long as he stays healthy, Davis is expected serve as the Cubs' closer this season after being acquired for Jorge Soler in December.

The Cubs were unwilling to pay the massive asking price to re-sign Aroldis Chapman, so they decided to go out and make a move for Royals reliever Wade Davis. The 31-year-old Davis has been lights out for the past three seasons in Kansas City, recording 47 saves while keeping his ERA under 1.90 for each of the last three years. The Cubs gave up Jorge Soler in order to get Davis, which seems like a small price to pay for one of the league's best relievers.

The deal would make sense for both sides, as the Cubs did not figure to try and meet Aroldis Chapman's asking price. Soler is a .258 career hitter, and at 25 is still young enough to put it together and live up to the hype that followed him to the bigs. The Cubs figure to make a move or two in a crowded outfield this offseason.

The Cubs have just expressed confidence in returning Hector Rondon to the closer role, but don't fall asleep during the Winter Meetings. Davis would immediately step into the closer role if the deal is made, and pitching for the reigning World Series champs is always an interesting career move.

When healthy, Davis is one of the best closers in baseball. He went through some arm trouble in 2016 but he's completely fine heading into 2017. The weird part about the Royals exercising this option is just a few weeks ago, they were entertaining trade offers to clear up space because he cost them too much.

On Friday, the Kansas City Royals activated Wade Davis from the DL. Davis who has been recovering from a flexor strain, figures to resume his ninth inning duties right out of the gate, as he is one of the top closers in the league.

Davis has been out since July 27 with a right flexor strain in his forearm. Davis has made three scoreless rehab appearances, striking out four in three innings for Rookie league Surprise and Triple-A Omaha. Davis will immediately reclaim his role as the closer for the Royals once he returns to the roster. Before the injury, Davis had a 1.60 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 32/15 K/BB ratio over 33.2 innings for 21 saves.

The expectation is that the Royals will call up the closer once the rosters expand for September, but if it ends up being a couple of days after the first of the month, then there is still not much issue. Expect him to return to his former position as the primary closer, despite the solid job done by Kelvin Herrera in his stay.
