Rondon struggled in two outings, giving up three home runs over just two innings, but he said he still enjoyed the experience. "Any moment you go to represent your country, and be there for those fans, it's fun," Rondon said. "I know I had a bad outing that day [against Team USA]. ... It is what it is, and I enjoyed playing with those guys." Rondon figures to work in a setup role ahead of Wade Davis in Chicago's bullpen this year, and he's a good handcuff option for Davis owners.

He said in February that he would seek the Cubs' permission to pitch in the WBC, and apparently he received the go ahead. Venezuela faces USA on Wednesday evening in San Diego, so Rondon will presumably be available out of the bullpen for that game.

Rondon spent some time on the DL last season with a triceps injury, and he wants to make sure he's 100 percent healthy for the start of the MLB season. Venezuela will begin play in the WBC on March 10 against Puerto Rico.

Rondon will likely return to the closer role he had prior to the team trading for Chapman in the middle of last season. He has 77 total saves in the last 3 seasons for the Cubs and should be owned in fantasy this upcoming season. The Cubs will of course be one of the top teams in baseball.

As of now, manager Joe Maddon says Hector Rondon is the Cubs closer for 2017.

It is not likely that the Cubs will have Aroldis Chapman in 2017, absent some huge change in circumstances. Rondon performed well as closer prior to his tricep injury, but was not as sharp when he came back. Joe Maddon does have a sense of loyalty to his closers, though, so it will be Rondon's role to lose it appears.

Cubs activate Hector Rondon from the 15-day disabled list.

The former Cubs closer has been out since August 16th with a triceps ailment but is now ready to come back to his setup role in the Chicago pen. He has been very good out of both roles for the Cubs this year but was bumped out of the ninth inning gig in favor of Aroldis Chapman at the trade deadline. He should figure in a save or two down the stretch as Joe Maddon doesn't want to tax the 105-mph lefty too much.

Rondon hasn't pitched since August 16th, but the timing of his return is ideal for Chicago as they prepare for their postseason run. The Cubs are a heavy favorite to win the World Series and bullpen depth goes a long way toward doing so. Rondon has a 2.47 ERA on the year with an impressive 0.80 WHIP.

Hector Rondon threw 22 pitches in a simulated game Saturday. He was able to throw 100 percent.

The simulated game was opted for instead of a rehab start. Should he show no ill effects, expect him to be reactivated Monday and return to provide support for the Cub bullpen. With Pedro Strop extending his stay on the DL, his return will be welcomed by the North Siders.

Hector Rondon (tricep) will head out on a rehab assignment on Saturday.

The now former Cubs closer went down with a triceps strain a couple of weeks ago and is actually eligible to return from the DL on Friday, but it sounds like the Cubs are more comfortable with him getting a few practice runs in first. Aside from Saturday, he will also pitch on Monday at Triple-A Iowa. The exact return date or how many rehab appearances hasn't been set yet, but a return in the next week or so is likely. He should come back to the setup role in front of Aroldis Chapman.

Chicago Cubs Hector Rondon, who has been sidelined for nearly three weeks with a right triceps strain, threw a bullpen session Tuesday of about 25 pitches. He said he felt good afterward, and is expected to throw another side session either Thursday or Friday. This is good news for the Cubs who are also looking forward to the return of hurler John Lackey.
