Another productive night for the 29-year-old third baseman. d’Arnaud had an RBI single in the sixth, an RBI double in the eight and scored the first run of the ballgame in the third on a Freddie Freeman triple. He has proven to be very versatile for the Braves, already playing five different positions this year. He is batting a very sweet .276/.349/.366 in 42 games and could be a nice flier pick up in deeper NL-only leagues. The Braves will continue their series with the Marlins on Friday night as Justin Nicolino takes the mound for Miami. d’Arnaud has never faced the 24-year-old before.
Freeman’s triple in the third inning was his second triple in his last three games and his fourth of the season. What would the Braves be without Freeman in the lineup? He has been their most consistent threats all season. The first baseman is batting .285/.370/.502 with 13 homers, 29 RBI and 37 runs scored through 78 games. The Braves will continue their series with the Marlins on Friday night as Justin Nicolino takes the mound for Miami. Freeman has had five career at-bats against the 24-year-old and has just one hit.
Flowers nearly doubled his total number of doubles this season in one game on Thursday night. He had five doubles in 46 games coming into this game and had three on the evening against the Marlins. The veteran catcher has been splitting time behind the plate with A.J. Pierzynski while batting .252/.337/.400 with five home runs and 16 RBI overall. The Braves will continue their series with the Marlins on Friday night as Justin Nicolino takes the mound for Miami. Flowers has never faced the 24-year-old before.
Hechavarria had a two-out double in the top of the ninth to bring the game to within three runs but the Marlins still fell short. He has been on fire over the past three games going 6-for-13 with a double, a triple, two RBI and three runs scored. The batting line stands at .246/.279/.345 with three homers, nine doubles, four triples and 25 RBI. The Marlins will continue their series with the Braves on Friday night as Julio Teheran takes the mound for Atlanta. Hechavarria has a career .276 batting average with two RBI over 30 at-bats against Teheran.
Bour was only able to collect one hit on the evening but he made it count with a three run shot in the second inning off of the Braves’ Mike Foltynewicz. He collected six home runs, 20 RBI and 14 runs scored with a .317 average during the month of June. The 28-year-old Bour has a total of 15 homers and 46 RBI with a batting line of .269/.347/.534 on the season. The Marlins will continue their series with the Braves on Friday night as Julio Teheran takes the mound for Atlanta. Bour has a .333 average with home run and two RBI in six career at-bats against Teheran.
The Braves put in Arodys Vizcaino in the ninth to close the game out but after Adeiny Hechavarria’s two-out double to score Justin Bour, he was pulled for Mauricio Cabrera. It took Cabrera six pitches to induce Cole Gillespie to fly out to left and earn his first save of the season. He was just called up by the Braves on June 27th after holding batters to a .165 batting average at the Double-A level. The idea is for Cabrera to be used in a middle relief role.
The Braves activated Foltynewicz from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday night to start against the Marlins. Most did not think he would go deep into the game but three innings is even shorter than we expected. He did look solid in his short time on the field allowing just two earned runs on two hits. Owners have to be pleased to see that he only issued two walks on the evening. We will see if he gets another start in Philadelphia early next week.
The struggles continued for Chen on Thursday night as his ERA jumped to 5.11 with a 1.32 WHIP through 16 starts. It is a small miracle that his record stands at 4-3 for the season because Chen’s earned run average has grown in each of his three months thus far. The Mets bats are struggling and we can only hope that Chen takes advantage on Tuesday night.
Peralta missed the first two months of the season after having thumb surgery this off-season. The veteran took Dillon Gee deep in the sixth inning for his third homer in 20 games thus far this season. He has 10 RBI and eight runs scored in those 20 games with a batting line of .232/.267/.415. The Cardinals continue their home stand on Friday as the Brewers come to town. Jhonny Peralta is 17-for-37 (.459) lifetime off of Milwaukee starter Matt Garza with two home runs, two doubles and five RBI.
Moss parked his 17th home run of the season in the fourth inning off of the Royals’ Chris Young. Moss’ homer was the only run the Cardinals could muster off of the veteran. The 32-year-old finishes June with eight home runs during the month and a season long batting line of .256/.345/.581. The Cardinals continue their home stand on Friday as the Brewers come to town. Brandon Moss is 7-for-13 lifetime off of Milwaukee starter Matt Garza with a home run and a double.
