With the short slate of games on Thursday and the lack of a clear-cut Beast of the Day, we’re going to change up the format again. We’ll start with some of the highlights from Thursday and then discuss a few other important things from the baseball world that you should be aware of as you head down the stretch towards your impending championship. Even with the passing of MLB’s non-waiver trade deadline, there’s still plenty ahead. We’ve got waiver trades that are being discussed, late-season injuries, and of course, the plethora of minor leaguers being summoned as teams that are out of contention begin to audition some of their more high-profile youngsters. We’ve even got a few contenders reaching into their farm systems for a few guys that may give them the added boost they’ll need as they work towards a potential playoff spot. So without further ado, let’s get to it…
Have you ever heard that story about the baby bull sitting atop a hill with his father overlooking the valley strewn with cows? The son looks up to his father and says, “Hey dad! How ‘bout we run down that hill and grab one of them cows and have our way with her?” And the father looks down at his son and responds, “How about we just quietly walk down that hill and have our way with them all?” It’s a story about patience and maturity and it’s a story about thinking before you act. It popped into my mind here this early, early Sunday morning when I turned on my laptop to see a series of emails from both Giants fans and Tim Lincecum owners deriding me for my blasphemous statements regarding the one they belovedly refer to as The Freak.
On this special day in our nations history – by the way it might be more applicable for us to celebrate on July 2nd and not the 4th (see my report on why) – I'd like to extend my thanks to everyone who has ever fought for our freedoms be it with a sword, a cannon, a gun, a voice or the pen. Thanks you for giving us the freedom to do things like play fantasy baseball. Oh yeah, there's also some baseball stuff in this article too – though there really is no rhythm or reason today. I'm going to mention young hitters – guys like Brandon Belt and Ike Davis – I'll talk young callups on the hill like Chris Tillman and Trevor Bauer, and I'll also mention old guys like R.A. Dickey. Hey, what do you expect from a guy who is already four beers deep at 11 AM?
The biggest news coming out of baseball this weekend was the announcement of the All Star rosters for the upcoming mid-summer classic next week. And while I’d love to sit here and debate the selections and the snubs with you, I’ve realized, over time, that it’s pointless. For every guy I think doesn’t belong, five people will tell me that he does and vice versa. Sometimes the whole process can be so subjective that rarely will you ever have even just two people agree upon a set of rosters completely.
