Drew Steckenrider Headshot

Steckenrider was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Friday.

Steckenrider appeared just once during his brief cup of coffee in the big leagues and didn't allow a run, but he'll retreat to the minors with David Phelps returning from the bereavement list. Steckenrider will look to sustain the success he had in the minors prior to his call-up as evidenced by his 1.25 in ERA in 16 relief appearances for the Baby Cakes.

David Phelps Headshot

Phelps was reinstated from the bereavement list Friday.

Phelps has been out since May 21, but he'll return to the Marlins bullpen just in time for their series opener with the Dodgers. Drew Steckenrider was optioned to Triple-A to make room for him.
2:38 pm (EST)
Álex Ávila Headshot

Avila is back in the lineup for the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the White Sox, batting second and playing first base.

The 30-year-old wasn't scheduled for an off day Thursday after sustaining a left hand injury Wednesday, but ended up filling in for the injured James McCann, who subsequently was placed on the 10-day DL with a hand laceration. The sudden turn of events means Avila will be in line for the lion's share of starts behind the plate and give him further opportunities to prove his worth as an everyday starter. He's off to a great start thus far, batting .310 with 10 RBI and a .953 OPS this month. Avila takes the spot of Miguel Cabrera at first base for the opening game Friday, as John Hicks fills in behind the dish.
2:33 pm (EST)
Andrew Edwards Headshot

Edwards was reinstated from the MiLB disabled list and assigned to High-A Wilmington.

Edwards, a hard-throwing right-hander, will head back to Triple-A Omaha once he logs a few innings at the lower levels. A member of the Royals' 40-man roster, the 25-year-old managed a solid 3.96 ERA while striking out 74 over 61.1 innings at Double- and Triple-A combined last season.
2:33 pm (EST)
Sidney Crosby Headshot

Crosby set up an even-strength goal against the Senators in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals double-overtime win Thursday, increasing his playoff point total to 20; he's accumulated seven goals and 13 assists.

The all-world pivot was held pointless in three games of the grueling series versus Ottawa, but he'll look to expose a Nashville team that's been dampened at the center spot due to the loss of Ryan Johansen, who underwent emergency surgery on his thigh following a Game 4 loss to the Ducks. We know you'll be starting Crosby every chance you get, and the real debate at this point is whether he'll generally justify a higher fantasy draft selection than Edmonton's Connor McDavid, who'll be wrapping his mitts around the Art Ross Trophy at the awards ceremony in June.
2:24 pm (EST)
Cam Gallagher Headshot

Gallagher is slashing .243/.310/.320 through 31 games with Triple-A Omaha in 2017.

Gallagher's minor-league career .235 batting average isn't what the Royals expected when selecting him in the second round of the 2011 draft. Although the catcher remains on the 40-man roster, Gallaher's highly unlikely to make his MLB debut any time soon. He'll continue to work through his first season at Triple-A while providing the organization with depth in case of an emergency situation.
2:23 pm (EST)
Nick Castellanos Headshot

Castellanos is starting at third base and hitting sixth for the first game of Friday's doubleheader versus the White Sox.

Castellanos was held out for the final two games of the Houston series to give him a mental break, but he should be back in an everyday role moving forward. After slashing .285/.331/.496 with 18 home runs last season, the third baseman has struggled to get it going from the plate this season, hitting just .220 over 173 at-bats.
2:19 pm (EST)
Nate Jones Headshot

Jones (elbow) is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Friday, Bruce Levine of reports.

Jones ramped up his throwing activities last weekend, but it seems like he still has a couple more days before he returns from the disabled list. Given how much he's already thrown, it's not out of the question for the reliever to return to the fold within the next week.
2:16 pm (EST)
Miguel Cabrera Headshot

Cabrera is not in the starting lineup for the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the White Sox.

It appears to be a routine rest for Cabrera, who is hitting a blazing .400 from the plate since returning from an oblique injury. Regular starter Ian Kinsler is also out for the first game of the twin bill, so expect the veteran slugger back in the lineup for the second game Friday.
2:12 pm (EST)
Ramon Torres Headshot

Torres is putting together one of his finest minor-league seasons, hitting .306/.326/.434 through 44 games this year with Triple-A Omaha.

Most impressive about the shortstop's campaign is Torres' noticeably improved plate discipline. His 6.9 strikeout rate is well below his career mark of 13.5. Furthermore, the 24-year-old's slugging percentage is more than 100 points improved from last season. Torres projects to get his crack at MLB in the not-too-distant future.
