A rest day is all this amounts to for the Yankees normal starting catcher as he has been busy behind the plate recently. Austin Romine will get the gig for Tuesday as the Yankees begin a series again divisional foe Toronto.
Upton was scratched from Monday's lineup with quad tightness and it sounds like that is what's preventing him from playing again on Tuesday. Mike Aviles will get the start in left on Tuesday in his place and he should still be considered day-to-day.
The injury came out of nowhere as he played in all of Sunday's game and Boston then had Monday off. In either case the injury is considered minor and he is listed as day-to-day. Josh Rutledge will get the start at third base in his place on Tuesday and Shaw should be back out there in the next day or two.
Kendricks had a disappointing season a year ago and will now take on a slightly different role with the new defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz, coming over from Detroit. Kendricks also hasn't played 16 games in a season yet in his career and could be hoping that the added weight makes him less susceptible to injuries. Thoughts are that he will take the DeAndre Levy role for the Eagles defense like Levy has in Detroit which will make him the catch-all for the defense and require him to be out there for all 16 games.
