It’s late June, we’re wrapping up interleague play, we’re talking about rookies racking up enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title (hello, Mike Trout) and yet we still have some firsts for 2012 happening right before our eyes. Nothing better than something new and exciting, right? Well, two of fantasy baseball’s hottest pick-ups over the past few weeks made their 2012 debut Friday night and each of them performed up to task and worthy of a stash on your bench for however long you needed to stash them.
So I had just finished watching the first wave of games on Wednesday night and was going to get a jump on my article. Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey just pitched a one-hit, complete-game shutout, his second complete-game shutout in his last three outings, and had now gone four straight starts without allowing a single earned run. And as a topper, his 12 strikeouts gave him a total of 50 over his last five starts. Right? How do you not lead with that when doing a recap article of the night’s baseball highlights?
While I could sit here and run down the concept of interleague play and talk about how it cheapens the meaning of the World Series because these teams have now all played each other several times over a few year span, I’ll take the glass is half full approach here and relish in the fact that when we near interleague play, the week is filled with a full slate of games every day. No slow Monday or Thursday here; every team is playing. And with that full slate of games comes the usual excitement and fanfare that all full baseball days bring. But on Monday, we had the excitement of a number of firsts. And nothing’s better than your first, right?
