Christopher Gimenez Headshot

Gimenez has won Minnesota's backup catcher job and may also serve as the backup at first base with Kennys Vargas dealing with a toe injury and Byungho Park sent to the minors, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

John Ryan Murphy was sent to the minors after Gimenez outperformed him this spring. Gimenez may not get much time at first base as Vargas may not be out long.

Brady Austin Headshot

Austin was returned to AHL Rochester on Thursday.

Austin found his way into five NHL games after his call-up, recording eight shots, six hits and four PIM in that span. At 6-foot-3, 232 pounds, the 23-year-old is a behemoth of a defenseman set to become a restricted free agent this summer.

Bryan Mitchell Headshot

Mitchell will start the 2017 season as a relief pitcher, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Mitchell slipped during his latest spring start, which might've contributed to him losing out on a rotation spot. The right-hander posted a 3.24 ERA in 26 appearances (nine starts) with the big-league club last year, but he only struck out 12 batters and walked 11 in that time, so that sparkling number doesn't look too realistic. Even with this initial assignment, Mitchell should find himself in position to start at least a few games during the year.

Brian Elliott Headshot

Elliott stopped 29 of 33 shots during Wednesday's loss to Los Angeles.

Elliott entered the outing sporting an active 12-1 record with a .944 save percentage and 1.66 GAA, so Wednesday's result was a rare poor showing. He projects to continue seeing the lion's share of starts going forward, but it's worth noting that Calgary has a potentially daunting schedule with divisional dates against San Jose (twice), Anaheim (twice) and another game against Los Angeles to round out the season. For now, Elliott likely still deserves the benefit of the doubt, though.
10:19 am (EST)
Philipp Grubauer Headshot

Grubauer allowed three goals on 35 shots in a 5-3 victory Wednesday over the Avalanche.

It was Grubauer's first start since way back on March 11, so it was a fairly solid performance for a guy who'd just spent the previous nine games on the bench. He's obviously a distant No. 2 to stud netminder Braden Holtby in D.C., but his .924 save percentage and 2.14 GAA have made him a useful asset this season as one of the league's best backups.
10:17 am (EST)
Robbie Grossman Headshot

Grossman is likely to begin the season as Minnesota's starting DH with Kennys Vargas dealing with a foot injury and Byungho Park sent to the minors, LaVelle E. Neal of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

It's not clear if Vargas will be placed on the DL to begin the season or he could be optioned to the minors. If he can get healthy quickly, he could return as the DH since Park was sent to the minors despite hitting six home runs this spring.
10:16 am (EST)
Aaron Judge Headshot

Judge was named the Yankees' starting right fielder for Opening Day on Thursday, Brendan Kuty of The Star-Ledger reports.

Aaron Hicks was threatening a bit, but the Bronx Bombers instead want to see what the free-swinging slugger can offer in an everyday role out of the gate. With Judge's potentially titanic power comes a lot of holes in his swing, but he's made efforts to tighten them up with shorter mechanics in camp. He still carries upside as a potential masher of 30-plus home runs per season, but even at his peak, they may come with plenty of warts.
10:16 am (EST)
Josh Collmenter Headshot

Collmenter got the start in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets and allowed one run on four hits while striking out five over five innings.

He's set for a long relief role with the Braves this season, but Collmenter has still put together a strong spring, posting a 2.81 ERA and 10:1 K:BB in 16 innings. The team has younger arms like Matt Wisler and Aaron Blair available at Triple-A Gwinnett should a long-term vacancy open up in its rotation, but Collmenter could see the occasional spot start as Atlanta looks to keep veterans like R.A. Dickey and Bartolo Colon fresh during the season.
10:15 am (EST)
Drew Pomeranz Headshot

The Red Sox have placed Pomeranz on the 10-day DL with a left forearm flexor strain, Evan Drellich of CSN New England reports.

Earlier this spring, Pomeranz was experiencing triceps tightness, so it's interesting that he's sidelined with an issue in a different part of his arm. With the league-wide change to a 10-day DL, Pomeranz is still an option to start April 9 against Detroit, the first time Boston needs a fifth starter. If Pomeranz isn't ready to take the ball by that time, Kyle Kendrick is the most likely candidate to slot into the rotation in his place.
10:15 am (EST)
Joely Rodriguez Headshot

Rodriguez has earned a bullpen spot on the Opening Day roster, Meghan Montemurro of The News Journal reports.

Rodriguez had been in competition for one of the final roster spots, and will ultimately make the team as a lefty specialist in middle relief.
