We spend a lot of time in fantasy baseball talking about who to draft in the first two or three rounds that we often times don't focus enough on the positional battles that teams are going through during Spring Training. Does the second base decision with the Blue Jays impact a guy like Emilio Bonifacio who has such huge upside given his wheels? What about the Cardinals second and shortstop decisions – do they matter? Of course you are going to care about what the Angels do in the 9th inning, but maybe what the injury ravaged Yankees do in the outfield should also be something you concern yourself with? We'll discuss those battles and more in this piece.
Hanley Ramirez will be switching coasts as he has been dealt to the Dodgers. What type of player is the club from L.A. getting? Wandy Rodriguez escaped Houston and now has a chance at making the playoffs... with the Pirates (who knew?). Cole Hamels realized that the grass isn't always greener on the other side as he signed a massive deal to remain in Philadelphia. Ryan Desmpter's trade status is still in major limbo with the Braves looking like they might be out of the mix. Finally, some news on what is going on with the guys on the diamond including a slugger being released, another saying his rehab is going well, and a speedster whose value on the way up after one of the greatest hitters in baseball history broke his hand.
In the wake of hearing about rehab setbacks for both Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford, the baseball world got a little bit of good news as the Phillies finally activated first base slugger Ryan Howard on Friday and got him into the lineup immediately. The slugger had been on the shelf since the final at-bat of the Phillies final game of 2011 when he ruptured his Achilles tendon. The road to recovery was cumbersome, but he’s back now and fantasy owners that had him stashed are looking to reap the benefits as we get ready to head on into the second half of the season.
Well now I don’t mean to slight you here on the recap after a day off, but spending the night at the Giants/Astros game sort of takes away from your ability to watch multiple games simultaneously. I kept up with everything thanks to some nerdiness and a smart phone, but you know it’s just not the same. But you didn’t come here for excuses. You came here for some fantasy baseball information and gosh darn it, that’s what you’re gonna get. So screw the excuses and let’s just get to it.
Are you there, Dr. Andrews? It’s me, Jacoby. Red Sox Nation and fantasy owners around the world took it in the you-know-where Friday when Jacoby Ellsbury slid into second base and Tampa Bay shortstop Reid Brignac fell onto the outfielder’s shoulder. You could tell by the look on Ellsbury’s face – or maybe it was the obscenities that he was screaming as he lay there in pain – that this was going to be bad. He was helped off the field and immediately rushed for an MRI. A shoulder subluxation is what they’re calling it right now and owners are looking at missing their first-round draft choice for a minimum of six weeks. Further tests are going to be run – it won’t be less time, but it certainly could be more.
We have entered the final month of the season boys and girls and we are heading down the home stretch. It seems like with all of the minor league callups this season, the date of September 1st didn't mean as much this year. However, we will talk about the one big prospect that was called along with what we think he can bring you in the last weeks of the year. There is also news on two of his injured teammates, a rehabbing pitcher across town, and a catcher in Bean Town. I give you which major leaguer is the most proned to craziness, and a starting pitcher that I love for 2012. Don't lose focus now with football starting, stay right here with Rounding The Bases.

As always a very special thank you to Michael Stein of Fantasy Judgment for pinch hitting for me on Tuesday with his Top Ten Headlines, please be sure to check out his site as well. This is my first August article, and the best thing about baseball and fantasy baseball is that the news never stops no matter what part of the season you are in. Tonight's article is headed by two third basemen, one who might be getting himself in some hot water, and another who had his first hot night of the season. There is injury news as always, one good, one not as good with two guys with a very bright fantasy future. And of course there is some talk of two young prospects recently called to the majors, and not only how they are faring right now, but what you might expect from them going forward. It is time for you to finish up your Hump Day with Rounding The Bases.
After a month-long absence, your Tuesday Night Top Ten column is back…with a vengeance. Ok maybe not with a vengeance, but it is back. Some of them contain useful information. But they all contain sentences, words and punctuation. Now, without further adieu, here is the Tuesday Top Ten fantasy baseball headlines for July 26, 2011.
