This pretty much says it all. A longtime closer, Papelbon no longer has the stuff to back up the volatile attitude that he brings to clubhouses.
The one time speedster no longer utilizes that trait, so most of his fantasy value is kaput. He will bring value to the O's as a late-inning outfield replacement, as his work in the field is still top notch.
CarGo played in today’s first game of the double-header, going 0-3 with a walk. This appears to be a routine maintenance game off for Gonzalez, who has been bothered by a right ankle injury recently. Gonzalez has had a slightly disappointing season in the power department, hitting just 24 home runs while slashing .305/.355/.534.
It has been a frustrating season for owners who spent a high draft pick on Padres starter Tyson Ross in drafts this season. After making just one start, he has been shut down since then with a shoulder injury. The Padres were hoping to get him back up to the Majors at some point in December, but this setback does not bode well for that goal. He only pitched 0.2 innings in his first start back giving up four earned runs. It is possible we won’t see Ross throw another pitch in the big leagues this season.
Ethier has been out all season with a fractured tibia. He has played in four games already with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga and is scheduled to play with them throughout the weekend. So far he has hit well at Class-A, hitting .385/.467/.538, but he likely has a long road back before getting a chance at any big league at-bats. If he does get called up at some point in September, it would probably wouldn’t be worth the risk to pick him up since he has been out for so long.
Any word of injury for the 36 year-old veteran is not good news, but this injury does not appear to be serious. Pujols was held out of Wednesday’s lineup with this plantar fasciitis, but is expected to be back in the lineup for Thursday. Fantasy owners should certainly pay attention to lineup news on Friday to make sure Pujols is back in there for the Angels.
Coghlan has been on the disabled list since August 16th with a rib contusion. He has appeared in five rehab games with Triple-A Iowa and has hit .471 in his time there. The left-handed outfielder has struggled this season, hitting .165/.261/.288 with five home runs and 19 runs batted in. When he returns to the lineup he shouldn’t be considered for fantasy lineups.
The Rockies will call up right-handed relief pitcher Christian Bergman for the second game of their double header against the Dodgers. Bergman has a 6.52 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 19/5 K/BB ratio in the Majors this season over 19.1 innings. Bergman will go back down to the minors after the game, but could get recalled once rosters expand.
