Well, folks, it’s getting to that point in the season where it’s time to start cutting down the fantasy baseball recap pieces and start turning our attention over to the fantasy football pre-draft festivities. Or, at least, that’s what I’m being told. I’m going to still try and make it over here once a week, if not twice, just depending on whether there’s some real important that I feel should be discussed. After all, there could still be some significant player movement with the waiver trade deadline still looming and once rosters expand on September 1st, there could be more than just a few gems worthy of using over the final month of the season. So not to worry…we’re not shutting out baseball altogether.
In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the highlights from Sunday and see if there aren’t a few late-season thoughts that may help as we wind down the 2013 season.
Fantasy Beast of the Day
|Stephen Strasburg, WAS||9.0||1||4||0||0||1||10||0.00||0.56|
Well, well, well…look who just tossed his first career complete game. As someone who doesn’t own Stephen Strasburg in any league, I guess I didn’t give it much thought, but yes, I was surprised to see that this was the first time the youngster went the distance. He looked like he had everything working in this one as he needed just 99 pitches (66 strikes) to finish all nine frames and notched his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season (yes, only two double-digit strikeout games surprised me as well). The Nationals are way too far behind in their division and with a little more than a month and a half to go in the season, the eight-game deficit in the wild card race seems troubling as well. Still, there has been no talk of limiting his appearances down the stretch which means you should count on him to finish the year strong and help you towards a league title.
|Alex Gordon, OF KC||3-4, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, SB|
|Adam Jones, OF BAL||2-5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, SB|
|Freddie Freeman, 1B ATL||2-3, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB|
|Martin Perez, SP TEX||W, CG, 1.00 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, 8 K|
|Felix Hernandez, SP SEA||W, 0.00 ERA, 0.63 WHIP, 9 K|
Alex Gordon took a step back last year and looked as if another one was coming this season. But he managed to salvage the year with a little boost of power and he is currently on-pace to match a career-high in RBI total, so it’s not a total wash-out. The Royals are surging and team leaders like Gordon are looking to finish the year strong, so if you own him, continue to leave him in your starting lineup.
Seriously…I love Adam Jones. I had him here as the Fantasy Beast of the Day a few articles ago and he is almost just as deserving today as he continues to impress as a strong power/speed combo. He’s inching towards new career-highs in every offensive category save for stolen bases and it looks like he could plateau at this level for a little while. I think I can speak on every Jones owner’s behalf when I say I wish the walk rate were higher, but it’s really hard to argue with the results we’ve gotten so far.
Though his pace for power has been slowed, partially due to an injury earlier in the year, Freddie Freeman is quietly blossoming into one of the finest and all-around first basemen out there. He has now hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games and is batting .386 (22 for 57) with two doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI in that span.
Kudos to Martin Perez for his complete-game victory on Tuesday and his third consecutive quality start thrown. In addition to the improved performance over these last three starts, he’s also kicked in some decent strikeout numbers as well. I don’t know if he’s someone I’m really trusting wholeheartedly just yet, but I’ll probably give him a try against the Mariners next.
And what more can you say about Felix Hernandez? No really, is there anything? Probably not. Super-stud, elite pitcher who makes every team, both fantasy and/or reality, better. He’s now allowed just five earned runs over his last 35 innings (five starts) with a 38:7 K:BB.
|Mike Napoli, C BOS||0-3, BB, 3 K|
|Darin Ruf, OF PHI||0-3, 3 K|
|Elliot Johnson, 2B KC||0-3, 2 K|
|Jeremy Hellickson, SP TB||L, 12.00 ERA, 2.33 WHIP, 2 K|
|Jose Quintana, SP CHW||L, 9.00 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 6 K|
It almost seems unfair to rail anyone in this section here on what could be the last day – it won’t be but just in case…
I will say that I’ve officially had it with Jeremy Hellickson. You can only hold out so much hope for so long and this season has been a disaster for me with him. I’ve tried. Really, I’ve tried. But I’m done. He’s just not the pitcher I thought he was or could have been and he has destroyed my ratios for the very last time.
