Mat Latos fell to 5-4 after allowing five runs on ten hits and a walk with two strikeouts over five innings against the Orioles on Tuesday.
The surface stats suggest that Latos is having another fine season. In fact, before his implosion Tuesday evening, he owned a more than respectable 3.15 ERA. If you dig a little, however, you'll find that Latos's skills are quickly deteriorating. He has a career-low strikeout rate in 2014 (6.60 K/9), and has lost significant fastball velocity in each of the last two seasons. It appears he's on the Jered Weaver career track. He's someone to avoid heading into 2015. ANALYST:
Marc Krauss went 1-for-4 with a solo home run on Thursday in Toronto.
Krauss is hitting only .150 with a .350 slugging percentage after launching his first home run of the season. It was just his seventh game of the season, but there’s no doubt he’ll need to cut down on the strikeouts if he’s ever going to be able to showcase the decent pop he has. The left-handed hitter was called up from AAA to try and infuse some offense in Anaheim and was slugging .639 over his past 10 games. With Matt Joyce really struggling, expect Krauss to steal some of his at-bats over the next few weeks. Analysis: Kevin Luchansky
