Justin Verlander allowed one earned run on nine hits while walking two and striking out eight over seven innings as the Tigers beat the White Sox 7-1 on Friday.
Verlander improved to 12-11 with a 4.68 ERA and 1.45 WHIP after Friday's solid performance after allowed eight earned runs over his previous two trips to the mound. His eight strikeouts were also a 10 start-high, while owning a nine year-low 6.93 K/9 over 171.1 innings of work. Although he has had a down season up to this point, he is the type of player that can step it up when needed most so look for him to turn things around following this solid outing. He will look to keep up the pace when he takes on the Indians on Wednesday.ANALYST: Matthew Beck
Fernando Rodney has hit a recent rough patch, but said he's put it behind him.
Rodney's closing job is in danger right now, as they 38-year old has already blown a save and has given up in seven runs 3 1/3 innings. Carson Smith could be next in line for saves should Rodney be removed from the job, though Yoervis Medina is another option in the back of the bullpen. As a closer, Rodney will have to have a short term memory and put the issues behind him, as he has a great track record and the stuff is still there for him to succeed in the ninth inning.
