49ers Aldon Smith has been suspended without pay for the first nine games.
Roger Goodell and the NFL are on a rampage here and while some fans might be upset, it is the intelligent and sensible fan who understands that this type of action is needed. Smith has been stopped for drunk driving multiple times, he's had both illegal narcotics and firearms found both in his car and on his person and has had the police summoned to his home on more than one occasion due to problems caused by gang member with whom he associates regularly. He had a mandated stint in rehab last year and was allowed to return to the field and he obviously didn't learn a single thing. Keep taking away their likelihood and maybe, just maybe, they'll wise-up and stop being such morons.ANALYST: Howard Bender
Denard Span (back) is not in the Nationals lineup on Tuesday.
Span left Monday's game with back spasms and they are causing him to miss Tuesday's game as well. Span should not be out for more than a game or two which will be a relief to Nats fans as they deal with injuries all over the diamond this season. Michael Taylor will play center and lead off for the Nationals in the second game of the Reds series. Analysis: Matt Selz
Marlins recall INF Jordany Valdespin from Triple-A New Orleans.
He will take the roster spot forfeited by Marcell Ozuna after he was demote on Sunday. Valdespin has not appeared in the majors this season while putting up solid numbers at Triple-A. In 60 games he's hitting .287/.342/.378 with one homer, and six thefts. Not sure how much playing time he will receive but he could have slight fantasy relevance if playing time is available. Marlon Byrd is not in the Reds lineup on Tuesday.
Tuesday's off day is just a day of rest for the veteran slugger. Byrd has been on a hot streak since coming off the DL June 19th and is currently in the midst of an 11-game hit streak. Skip Schumaker will draw the start against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals. Analysis: Matt Selz
