The Denver Nuggets signed Jerrelle Benimon on Friday.
The 6-foot-8 power forward won Colonial Athletic Association player of the year honors in 2013 and 2014 while playing at Towson University and averaged 18.7 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists last season. But apparently, the biggest news about this is that Benimon is the first person from Fauquier County in Virginia to sign an NBA deal.rnANALYST: Howard Bender
Joakim Soria has been traded to the Pirates.
The Pirates already have the NL saves leader in Mark Melancon so Soria figures to move into the setup role for the Pirates. As for the Tigers closer situation owners will have to wait for an official announcement but Alex Wilson has been their most effective reliever this season and could be first in line. Brandon Beachy is scheduled to pitch Thursday for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Beachy's first stint with the Dodgers didn't fare too well this season, so he is going to head back to Triple-A and look to continue building arm strength in hope of regaining his form. The Dodgers have added two starting pitchers prior to the trade deadline, so barring injury, it doesn't appear that Beachy will be helping the big league club in a starting role anytime soon. Pirates are close to a deal with the Tigers for closer Joakim Soria.
The Pirates, as with most contenders, have been looking for relief help. With Detroit as clear sellers at this point, Soria fits the mold of exactly what Pittsburgh is looking for. He isn't going to close for Pittsburgh, but he will provide a much needed solid arm to setup Mark Melancon. We'll have a full breakdown of the deal, if and when it goes down. Analysis: David Kerr
