David Ortiz went 1-for-6 with a double, two RBI, a run scored and a walk during the Red Sox' 19-inning 5-4 loss to the Angels on Saturday.
Ortiz is now hitting just .167 with two extra-base hits in the month of August, which has dropped his second half batting average under the Mendoza Line (.197 BA). Despite his recent struggles, Ortiz is still sitting with 26 home runs and 84 RBI as he remains on pace to put up 30-plus home runs and 100-plus RBI for the second straight season. Fernando Rodney has hit a recent rough patch, but said he's put it behind him.
Rodney's closing job is in danger right now, as they 38-year old has already blown a save and has given up in seven runs 3 1/3 innings. Carson Smith could be next in line for saves should Rodney be removed from the job, though Yoervis Medina is another option in the back of the bullpen. As a closer, Rodney will have to have a short term memory and put the issues behind him, as he has a great track record and the stuff is still there for him to succeed in the ninth inning.
