Jets QB Mike Vick on Jets QB Geno Smith: "He’s going to be great. He’s going to be 10 times better than me."
It sounds as though Vick is content on being the Jets' backup quarterback and as well he should be. The Jets have to find out exactly what the have with Geno Smith and you can't learn that if he is riding the pine to an over-the-hill veteran. Of course, at the first sign of real trouble--or an injury--Vick will be right back into a starting role for New York.ANALYST: David Kerr
Blue Jays signed LHP J.A. Happ to a three-year deal.
On the surface, this doesn't look like a good deal for the Blue Jays. While they're desperately in need of a starter, and Happ fits the bill as...well, a starter, this is an overpay. $12 million a year for a 33-year old pitcher who had a 3.61 ERA last year, and last had a qualified season with an ERA under 4.00 in 2007, doesn't seem like the smartest of investments. Happ does have upside, in fact he had a 1.85 ERA and 2.19 FIP (63.1 innings) in Toronto last year in Pittsburgh last year, after being traded to the team from the Mariners, but a 4.64 ERA and 4.12 FIP in 108.2 prior innings with Seattle is less than encouraging. This deal could turn out well, but it is much more likely that it is a bust for the Blue Jays. Analysis: Ben Diamond
