Jeff Samardzija went the distance pitching eight innings Friday giving up three runs on five hits, including a home run, with no walks and five strikeouts in the 3-2 road loss to Seattle.
Samardzija was less shark and more shark bait in his second outing since joining the A's. The loss dropped his A's record to 1-1 and his season record to 3-8 in 19 combined starts with 2.78 ERA.ANALYST: Michael Pichan
The Red Sox are looking for an opportunity to give Brian Johnson his major league debut.
Johnson has a 2.92 ERA and 8.76 K/9 over 49 1/3 innings here in his first go-around with Triple-A Pawtucket. While the Red Sox would like to give him a taste of the majors, they'd obviously prefer to have a stronger rotation and not need to dip into their farm system as much as they have already. Steven Wright and Eduardo Rodriguez are getting a look right now. Should they fail and the struggles at the back end of the rotation continue, then perhaps we'll see Johnson at some point.
