Update: The Cubs send Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Athletics for Addison Russell, per sources. There may be other players and teams also involved.
Wow. Just wow. Despite the long-term potential for Russell, this is a win-now move for the A's who have now crushed it with regard to their pitching staff. Even with Sonny Gray possibly having his innings capped, the A's have three bona fide starters to work with heading into the playoffs. Interesting move for the Cubs who are now ridiculously loaded int he middle infield with Russell, Starlin Castro and Javier Baez. Initial thought is that they could turn themselves into immediate candidates for the David Price sweepstakes which, heading into next year, would certainly be an upgrade for their pitching staff. In truth, there are so many possibilities here, it's almost scary.ANALYST: Howard Bender
Luol Deng (knee) won't return Sunday.
Michael Beasley is likely the candidate to replace the Deng starting minutes for the rest of the way. There is no word on the long term implications of the injury yet, but if there is, Beasley might be a solid play for the rest of the season. Analysis: Dom Murtha
Athletics reassign Luke Carlin, Max Muncy and Andy Parrino to minor league camp.
One of these things is not like the other. Muncy is a 23-year old prospect, while Carlin and Parrino are older journeymen. Muncy, a first baseman, his 21 home runs in 2013 at High-A in 428 plate appearances. But the power hasn't translated to Double-A yet as he hit just seven home runs in 530 plate appearances there last year. Muncy isn't really a prospect you have to know, but he's far more notable than Carlin and Parrino. Analysis: Brett Talley
