FANTASY PLAYER UPDATES & NEWS

Carlos Santana went 1-for-3 with an RBI and an run scored in Tuesday's 9-3 loss to the Angels.

Santana may be having a poor season overall, but the Indians catcher turned infielder is now hitting .333 with three home runs and 10 RBI in the month of June, as he tries to turn it around before the halfway point. Although his batting average is still under the Mendoza Line (.193 BA), his power production is worthy of roster consideration if he was dropped after a slow start. ANALYST: Matthew Beck

49ers placed ILB Chris Borland on the reserve/retired list.

Borland retired early in this offseason, so he logically would make the transition to this "list". It has also been reported that he will pay back most of his signing bonus.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Packers have released C Joe Madsen.

Madsen isn't a very athletic center and in today's NFL, it appears that is the direction that the position is beginning to head. The Packers said good riddance, but there is nothing saying that there won't be at least a couple of teams looking to give Madsen a training camp invite. Analysis: Dom Murtha

Michael Morse is not in the Marlins starting lineup on Monday.

Morse has struggled mightily so far this season (.193/.253/.284), so for now it appears that he will be getting a day off to recover his thoughts, but if he doesn't pick it up soon, Justin Bour will be getting many more starts at first base going forward.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Mike Miller will start on Monday in Game 1.

As of now it appears that Miller will be the starting small forward and Lebron will slide down to the power forward spot in place of Tristian Thompson, so set your daily league lineups accordingly. In any case, even if Thompson doesn't get the start, he will most likely still see the bulk of the minutes at the power forward spot, due to the Cavs overall lack of current depth at the position.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Iman Shumpert will start on Monday in Game 1.

Shump will be getting the start in place of the suspended J.R. Smith on Monday night for game one. He doesn't bring the same scoring punch as Smith, but expect Shumpert to shore up the Cavs defense during this Conference Semi-Final.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Adam Ottavino on Monday revealed he will likely face season-ending Tommy John surgery to repair an injured right elbow.

It appears that the scramble for Axford has begun in your league's waiver wire and free agent pool, as he will now see little resistance for save opportunities. Tough luck for Ottavino, however, as he was having himself a fine season in his first shot as a closer prior to the injury.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Rays Alex Cobb had "a little bit of a setback," and will be shut down from throwing and will see a doctor.

For now the Rays are downplaying this "little setback" but to fantasy owners, this news sounds very ominous. The enormity of the situation is still unclear, but so long as the Rays aren't considering Cobb at threat level red, there is no need for panic. Expect news on whether or not there will be an MRI or if he can continue throwing within the next couple of days.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Angels recalled C Carlos Perez from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Carlos Perez will be the replacement for the struggling backup catcher Drew Butera, so expect him to play only when Chris Iannetta needs a day off or is dealing with an injury. Essentially, Perez should have minimal fantasy value.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Angels designated Drew Butera for assignment.

The former Joe Mauer protégé just hasn't gotten the job done so far as Chris Iannetta's backup backstop, so the Angels have decided to cut ties with him. This shouldn't affect many fantasy rosters, as Butera was owned in less than 1-percent of leagues.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

49ers waive OLB Chase Thomas on Monday.

After serving his brief career as a special teams player, Thomas has been waived by the 49ers, as he was expected to start the season on the PUP list. There is no clear market for Thomas unless a team desperately needs some LB depth, but even so, there are plenty of other options out there.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Buccaneers claimed OT Reid Fragel off waivers from the Falcons.

Fragel towers at a massive 6'8" tall and sports an athletic 308 lbs for his frame. But still, after two years in the league, Fragel remains a bit of a raw talent and project player at offensive tackle. He will not be expect to start, but should be an interesting player to watch come training camp as he competes for a spot on the 53-man roster.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Raiders will release OT/OG Kevin Boothe.

Boothe's production dipped considerably over the last couple of years, and considering that the Raiders owe him a little over a million dollars next season, it is a no brainer that they cut ties with the aging lineman.  Analysis: Dom Murtha

Hyun-jin Ryu (shoulder) has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

This doesn't affect Ryu's timeline at all. It simply opens up a new spot on the Dodgers' 40-man roster. He is eligible to be activated May 26. Analysis: Howard Bender

Travis Ishikawa will begin a rehab assignment with High-A San Jose on Monday.

Ishikawa had suffered a setback in his rehab about a week ago as his back flared up on him again but he appears to be ready to give it a try once again. He is still about two weeks away. Analysis: Howard Bender
