FANTASY PLAYER UPDATES & NEWS

Randal Grichuk has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

Looks like Grichuk didn't outlast Oscar Taveras by much here as the outfielder heads back to Triple-A so the Cardinals could bolster the bullpen. He could be back soon enough, even before Taveras again, as the outfield depth could still use a little kick.ANALYST: Howard Bender

Backup catcher Jeff Mathis (broken right hand) is scheduled to get a follow-up X-ray next Friday.

The follow-up x-rays are just to ensure that he remains on-schedule for his return. He is estimated to be back around mid-May. Analysis: Howard Bender

RF Steven Souza Jr. will be back in the starting lineup Saturday night after being rested Friday night.

Souza was simply getting an extra day off after he left Thursday with a forearm cramp. It doesn't seem to be anything serious so continue to use him as you normally do. Analysis: Howard Bender

Anthony Gose is not in the Tigers starting lineup on Saturday.

With the Indians throwing righty Trevor Bauer, it's a bit curious as to why Gose is not in the lineup. He plays steadily against right-handed pitching and is slashing .333/.348/.511 this season, so perhaps there's an unreported injury lurking here. Addition updates are likely to come. Rajai Davis is playing center field and leading off. Analysis: Howard Bender

Dion Jordan was absent from the team's offseason workouts this week and his future with the Dolphins is in doubt.

Jordan has been a major disappointment since joining the Dolphins and it appears that the team is ready to cut bait. He is likely to pick up elsewhere but is unlikely to have any major impact. Analysis: Howard Bender

David Hernandez is slated to throw in an extended spring training game at the team facility in nearby Scottsdale on Saturday morning.

His recovery from Tommy John surgery has gone fairly smoothly and it sounds as if Hernandez is nearing a rehab assignment soon. His return estimate appears to be mid-May. Analysis: Howard Bender

Coco Crisp (elbow) took dry swings and played catch Friday, but there is still no timetable for his return.

He's just started baseball activities -- playing catch and taking swings -- this week and while he may be slightly ahead of schedule, the A's aren't going to rush anything and risk a setback. The estimate for Crisp's return is early June. Analysis: Howard Bender

OF Jake Marisnick was kept out of the starting lineup because of leg soreness he had while running from first to third against Seattle on Wednesday.

It doesn't sound like anything too serious, but he'll remain day-to-day and be re-evaluated before Saturday's lineup card is submitted. Marisnick is off to a great start to the season, batting .350 with one home run, six RBI and four stolen bases. Obviously he's not going to sustain this level, but he should be a real nice source for speed while he's playing every day. Analysis: Howard Bender

Richard Jefferson left Friday's game with a calf injury and did not return.

Jefferson played just 12 minutes and scored three points with one rebound, one assists and two steals. He's being considered day-to-day for now and will be re-evaluated Saturday. If he is unable to play in Game 4, Al-Farouq Aminu would likely fill in. Analysis: Howard Bender

Alex Cobb threw 21 pitches, all fastballs, off the mound Friday and expects to begin working on offspeed pitches before his next bullpen session, which will likely be Monday.

It's early in the rehab, but Cobb said he felt good after the session and everything seems on-schedule for a mid-May return depending on how many rehab starts they'll want him to make. Expect an additional evaluation late Monday. Analysis: Howard Bender

Nick Swisher collected three hits on Friday night in his first Minor League rehab game with Triple-A Columbus.

Swisher is coming back from double knee surgery and appears to be headed for a lengthy rehab stint. It's obviously capped at 21 days, but he is he is probably looking at closer to the maximum than the minimum. Analysis: Howard Bender
