Manager Terry Francona said the eventual goal remains to have John Axford return to the closer's role.
Axford has not allowed an earned run in five consecutive relief appearances, nor has he allowed a hit or walk in his last three games. Despite the manager's pronouncement, he will have a tough time unseating Cody Allen, who has saved four straight games.ANALYST: Ivar G. Anderson
MLB/MLBPA panel is deadlocked over whether Josh Hamilton should be sent to rehab.
Hamilton's fate rested in the hands of four people, and the votes were split on whether or not to send the former All-Star to rehab. Hamilton was known to have failed at least six drug tests as a minor leaguer and was suspended from baseball from 2004 to 2006. He is in the third year of a five-year, $125 million deal and the Angels are hoping that he is on the field. He has been a bust since inking this contract and he is worth no more than a last round draft pick, especially with this relapse news. Analysis: Colby Conway
