Justin Verlander's average fastball velocity is down three miles per hour from three years ago, according to FanGraphs.
Verlander got blown up again yesterday against the Rangers allowing 11 hits, three walks, and six earned runs not even through six innings of work. This is obviously some of the worst we've ever seen from Verlander in his career. Verlander is striking out hitters at his lowest rate since his first full season in the big leagues in 2006. Verlander's ERA has grown to over four with a 1.51 WHIP, and 50/30 K/BB ratio. ANALYST: Drew Phelps
Phillies recalled Cody Asche from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The Phillies seem ready to commit to Asche as their new starting left fielder which certainly gums up the outfield configuration for veterans like Ben Revere, Grady Sizemore and Jeff Francoeur. It also displaces Darin Ruf. While they may be happy with the defensive work he did down in the minors, Asche's bat never really heated up, so the team is still going to have some serious offensive woes. This plan may have looked good on paper, but it should be re-visited in a couple of weeks to see how things are panning out. Analysis: Howard Bender
