The Diamondbacks name Tony La Russa as Chief Baseball Officer. La Russa will report to Derrick Hall and oversee the entire baseball operations department.
GM Kevin Towers will be reporting directly to LaRussa. It remains to be seen if this was a move to restart the Diamondback franchise, after their terrible start this season. Kirk Gibson was already on the managerial hotseat, so this might be a bad sign for him. Towers recently said he was unsure of his future due to the bad start, and this doesn't look good for him, either.ANALYST: Ivar G. Anderson
Antonio Smith may sit out practice this week.
Smith is the subject of a child abuse investigation in Texas. The case has been dragging on for some time now, with the DA sifting through the report from the Fort Bend County Sheriff since February. Even if the case is ultimately dropped by the prosecutor, Smith could still face discipline from the league as part of its effort to improve its public image, as part of the personal conduct policy under the CBA between the players union and the league. Garcia left after less than two innings of action on Monday. He was coming off a knee issue that held him out two games before playing again on Sunday, where he went 1-for-2 with a strikeout. A problem significant to force him from the game, occurring with the same body part that sidelined him last week is of concern, so stay tuned for an update on his situation. Analysis: Ivar G. Anderson
