Fantasy Player Updates & News

Update: OF Michael Bourn (hamstring) ran the bases Wednesday and says he felt good. Manager Terry Francona said its a real possibility Bourn returns Thursday.

Running the bases is always the final test, so if Bourn doesn't report any issues, he should definitely be back in the lineup Thursday. The club will wait until Thursday morning before making that determination, however, all signs are looking good so far.ANALYST: Howard Bender

Hyun-Jin Ryu said his first MRI showed a torn labrum, back when he originally signed with the Dodgers., that is strange. Ryu has been dealing with shoulder issues since coming out of Korea two years ago, and the cause of that is a torn labrum, which evidently the club and Ryu have known about all along. Ryu pitching with a torn labrum for two seasons is pretty incredible, especially with the success he's had. Hopefully he can come back strong from season ending surgery on his shoulder and become a top-30 pitching in fantasy in 2016 like many were expecting out of him this year. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Hunter Strickland will join the Giants as their 26th man on Saturday.

With the Giants getting to add one more player to their 25-man roster for the upcoming double-header on Saturday, Strickland will join the team. He has top-tier reliever upside if he can reign in his command and propensity for giving up huge home runs in high leverage situations (yes, that is a nod to the pitcher giving up six home runs in 8.1 postseason innings pitched), but will head back down to the minors after the game. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Update: Manager Bruce Bochy said if Matt Cain does not suffer any setbacks, he will face live hitters Tuesday.

Cain is recovering from a strained flexor tendon, but he's made solid progress, throwing all of his pitches in his last bullpen session. He could return in mid-June for the Giants, but he's been constantly ineffective or hurt since the wheels fell off for the pitcher in 2013 and can't be counted on to contribute in fantasy leagues, though he is worth taking a flier on for his upside alone. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Bobby Parnell allowed 1 walk and struck out 1 batter in a scoreless inning for St. Lucie. He is expected to move on to Double-A Binghamton.

Parnell has encountered velocity issues in his return from Tommy John surgery, causing his rehab to be greatly slowed. He's probably not going to be ready to return until mid-June at this rate, and he does not have much fantasy value once he is back with Jeurys Familia thriving in the closing role. Analysis: Ben Diamond

James Wright (knee) is expected to participate in offseason workouts next week.

The seventh round pick in 2014 was starting to breakout for the Bengals last season before injuring his PCL in November, and is just now coming close to full strength.  Analysis: Ben Diamond

Update: Yasiel Puig felt tightness in his hamstring while jogging Friday.

This is a very bad sign for Puig, who has already encountered a setback in his hamstring injury that has limited him to just 43 at bats this season. A second setback now likely will cause him to be shut down for a week or more, as LA Times reporter Bill Shaiken wrote that "that's a DL return measured in weeks, not days." Puig was just a day or two from returning to the Dodgers a few weeks ago before aggravating his hamstring injury in a minor league rehab game, and now could be out through mid-June. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Vance Worley will remain in the the bullpen "for now," according to manager Clint Hurdle.

Worley has a 4.17 ERA and 1.54 WHIP this season, and has been demoted to the bullpen. The Pirates rotation has been one of the best in the league, with Worley being their weakest link. He'll be delegated to a bullpen role for the time being. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Andre Smith (triceps) should be ready for the start of training camp, but is not expected to participate in offseason workouts.

Smith is recovering from torn triceps and subsequent surgery, causing him to miss the final five games of the regular season and the Bengals only playoff game. He has not participated in organized team activities, but Smith should be good to go for training camp. Smith is expected to start at right tackle for the Bengals this upcoming season, and his presence will be a big part of their offense. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Daniel Norris lasted four innings for Triple-A Buffalo Friday night at Toledo, he allowed three runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

Norris, one of the Blue Jays best pitching prospects, started the season as a member of Toronto's MLB rotation, but struggled with control, allowing 10 earned runs in 23 1/3 innings with 18 walks. Norris had a rough start on Friday in Triple-A on Friday, and while he has been very good in the minors prior to the start (a 2.50 ERA in three starts), the four walks are not acceptable. He's just a couple solid starts away from being promoted to the big leagues again, but is not a reliable fantasy option until he can consistently hit the strike zone. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Matthew Dellavedova will start for Kyrie Irving, who was ruled out before the game.

Irving will miss game two of the eastern conference finals, and is questionable for game three on Sunday, with knee tendonitis and a right foot strain. Dellavedova will start at point guard as long as Irving is out. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Brandon Morrow (shoulder inflammation) will throw another bullpen Saturday or Sunday. Padres are eyeing a simulated game for him next week in Anaheim.

Morrow hasn't pitched since May 2nd with left shoulder inflammation, but he threw a successful bullpen session on Thursday and is likely to throw another one on Sunday. He may require a simulated game or two followed by a rehab start before making his return to the Padres in mid-June. Morrow is worth owning in deeper leagues due to his upside and solid performance this season prior to his injury, but he is also injury prone and risky. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Hawks F DeMarre Carroll will start in Game 2 on Friday.

Carroll is dealing with a knee injury, and it is a bit of a surprise that he will be able to play on Friday. The Hawks did not sound confident about Carroll's availability just yesterday, but he will be able to play. The fact that the small forward was considered a game-time decision and nearly did not play makes it tough to envision him logging his standard 30+ minutes of playing time, likely causing Kent Bazemore to have a larger role in Friday's game. Analysis: Ben Diamond

Carl Crawford is still in Arizona working out. He still has some soreness in his oblique.

Crawford suffered a torn oblique on April 27th, and still hasn't been partaking in baseball activities. Oblique injuries can be particularly troubling for baseball players, as they have a knack for lingering and sapping power, so Crawford could be out until late-June.  Analysis: Ben Diamond
