The Panthers have exercised their fifth-year option on QB Cam Newton. He's under contract through 2015 now.
No doubt the Panthers were going to exercise the option on their franchise quarterback. The question becomes for fantasy owners though, can Newton be trusted this coming season as he is recovering, supposedly at a rapid pace, from ankle surgery and does he have enough talent around him to make him worth the risk. I am leaning towards no.ANALYST: Michael Pichan
Blue Jays signed LHP J.A. Happ to a three-year deal.
On the surface, this doesn't look like a good deal for the Blue Jays. While they're desperately in need of a starter, and Happ fits the bill as...well, a starter, this is an overpay. $12 million a year for a 33-year old pitcher who had a 3.61 ERA last year, and last had a qualified season with an ERA under 4.00 in 2007, doesn't seem like the smartest of investments. Happ does have upside, in fact he had a 1.85 ERA and 2.19 FIP (63.1 innings) in Toronto last year in Pittsburgh last year, after being traded to the team from the Mariners, but a 4.64 ERA and 4.12 FIP in 108.2 prior innings with Seattle is less than encouraging. This deal could turn out well, but it is much more likely that it is a bust for the Blue Jays. Analysis: Ben Diamond
