Jeff Samardzija allowed two run on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 7.1 innings against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. He was forced to settle for a no-decision after the bullpen gave up five runs in the ninth inning.
The Cubs bullpen imploded again? You don't say. Samardzija has to be beside himself as he has yet to earn a victory despite limiting the opposition to no more than two runs in a start and owning a 1.53 ERA which is inside the top 10 among National League starting pitchers. He'll try for his first win again Sunday against the Reds.ANALYST: Michael Pichan
Cecil Shorts might be ready to play against Jacksonville in Week 6.
Both Shorts and Nate Washington missed Thursday's game, making way for Jaelen Strong and Keith Mumphery. While strong caught two TDs, Mumphery was a non-factor. Strong earned himself more playing time in the coming weeks, possibly coming at Shorts' expense, though it could come at Washington's as coach Bill O'Brien said that Shorts had a better chance of playing against Jacksonville than Washington does.
