Donte Whitner agrees to 4-year, $28 million deal with the Browns.
The Browns have officially moved on from potential franchise defender T.J. Ward as Whitner slides into Ward's strong safety role. Something tells me that Ward was no longer interested in coming back to Cleveland when he heard Denver was interesting in his services. Whitner is a still a young (28) above-average safety. Whitner will join Joe Haden in the Browns' backfield, and rumors are swirling that the Browns could be in on the Darelle Revis sweepstakes as well. Looks like the Browns are intending to field the best defensive backfield the game has ever seen. ANALYST: Ray Flowers
Rays designated P Grant Balfour for assignment.
There's no word as to why Balfour was DFA'd here as he's pitched pretty well so far, especially for a guy who had to leave the team during spring training to help take care of his ailing father. He did hit a bump in the road Saturday when he allowed three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning, but before that, he had made five appearances, pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed two hits with no runs. The Rays will likely give some reason for the move, but look for Balfour to pick up with another team fairly quickly. Analysis: Howard Bender
