Grant Balfour said he felt flat on Saturday. He says he's going through the old dead arm period of spring training.

Seems a bit early to me, but then again, it's Balfour's arm we are talking about here. If he gets the dead arm issue over early, the better for his regular season production.ANALYST: Ivar G. Anderson

Jerami Grant (illness) will start on Wednesday.

Grant missed Monday's game with a cold but has since gotten back on his feet. He'll play his usual role Wednesday. Analysis: Howard Bender

Update: J.J. Barea (ankle) will play Wednesday.

The Mavs were expecting him to return, so this is the official word. He should see his usual minutes so long as the ankle holds up all night. Analysis: Howard Bender

Dwight Howard (knee, rest) remains questionable Wednesday.

Howard sat out Monday, the second game of a back-to-back, so with games Wednesday and Thursday now, the Rockets are likely to sit him one of those days as well. Expect a decision closer to game time. Analysis: Howard Bender

Derrick Rose will not play against the Bucks Wednesday.

Rose was doing full-contact drills Monday and participating in 5-on-5 work Tuesday. He's building up his conditioning and it shouldn't be much longer before he's back on the court. How many minutes he logs per game once he does return might be in question as the Bulls are looking more towards the playoffs than anything else. Analysis: Howard Bender

Terrence Jones (ribs, lung) wil play Wednesday.

Jones has missed the last six games with a collapsed lung, so to see him get back on the court Wednesday is great news just from a humanistic standpoint. If he can continue to shine glass as he's done throughout the season (7.3 boards per game), then he'll be a nice asset down the stretch. Analysis: Howard Bender

Rangers prospect Joey Gallo will undergo an MRI on his left heel and visit specialist Dr. John Crates on Thursday to determine the extent of the injury.

Gallo has only missed the last two days with the heel issue, but the Rangers are going to wisely be proactive here and get a precautionary MRI. Expect the team to update with results and a game plan soon enough. Analysis: Howard Bender

Delino DeShields Jr. has earned the final spot on the 25-man active roster.

DeShields will serve as a fourth/fifth outfielder for the Rangers and likely specialize in pinch-running and defensive replacement. You can think of him as a Jarrod Dyson-lite which gives him some stolen base potential vale in AL-only leagues. Analysis: Howard Bender

Rangers outfielder Carlos Peguero will start the season in Triple-A.

He's been languishing in Triple-A since 2011 with minimal success in any of his cups of coffee. He'll provide outfield depth for the Rangers and stay in their farm system while patiently awaiting a call-up. Analysis: Howard Bender

Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury returned to the starting lineup at the leadoff spot Wednesday.

Ellsbury played five innings and saw five at-bats in a minor league outing Tuesday. With no setbacks or issues reported, it looks like the oblique issue is a thing of the past. He'll be just fine for Opening Day. Analysis: Howard Bender

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon told reporters that pitcher Felix Hernandez will be able to throw 100 pitches in his Opening Day start despite having a short outing on Tuesday.

Hernandez' outing Tuesday was just a simple tune-up. There is no reason to think that he would be on any sort of a pitch count. Business as usual for King Felix. Business as usual. Analysis: Howard Bender

Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated that Wade Miley will be his starter for Boston's fourth regular season game on Friday against the Yankees in New York.

Miley posted a 3.71 ERA with an 11:8 K:BB over 17 innings this spring. He's got a serious transition to make moving to the American League but if he can maintain his over-50 percent ground ball rate this season, it should help keep his ratios in line. Analysis: Howard Bender

A.J. Hinch told reporters that Chris Carter will be the team's primary first baseman to start the season.

It looks like the Astros will shore up that defense and move Evan Gattis to the DH spot while using Colby Rasmus in left and Jake Marisnick in center. Carter is more than capable of handling the work at first base, so even with having to pay a little more mind to defense, he should rake at the plate just the same. Analysis: Howard Bender

Juan Lagares and the Mets have agreed to a contract extension through 2019.

The deal covers all of Lagares' arbitration years and guarantees him more than $20 million. It also includes a team option for 2020, which would be the first season that Lagares otherwise would be eligible for free agency. Analysis: Howard Bender
