Still a strong difference of opinion between Jeff Samardzija and Cubs in long-term contract talks: "If there wasn't a gap, we would have already signed."
A reliever for years, Jeff has been a strong starter for the Cubs the past two seasons. Samardzija's representatives are likely touting his K per inning arm and future outlook while the Cubs' folks are likely pointing to a 17-20 record and 4+ ERA trying to get Samardzija to sign for less than he wants. Luol Deng (knee) won't return Sunday.
Michael Beasley is likely the candidate to replace the Deng starting minutes for the rest of the way. There is no word on the long term implications of the injury yet, but if there is, Beasley might be a solid play for the rest of the season. Analysis: Dom Murtha
Athletics reassign Luke Carlin, Max Muncy and Andy Parrino to minor league camp.
One of these things is not like the other. Muncy is a 23-year old prospect, while Carlin and Parrino are older journeymen. Muncy, a first baseman, his 21 home runs in 2013 at High-A in 428 plate appearances. But the power hasn't translated to Double-A yet as he hit just seven home runs in 530 plate appearances there last year. Muncy isn't really a prospect you have to know, but he's far more notable than Carlin and Parrino. Analysis: Brett Talley
