The Cleveland Indians are on the verge of signing right-handed reliever John Axford, who was non-tendered by the St. Louis Cardinals, a source told ESPN.com Sunday.
Axford made a giant leap up when he moved to the first base side of the rubber a few years back in the Brewers organization. He has some arm trouble last season which led to a drop in velocity and more importantly his curveball hanging in a RH hitters wheelhouse more often than not. ANALYST: Jeff Mans
Eduardo Rodriguez will start Thursday in Texas for the Red Sox.
The Red Sox were considering bringing Rodriguez up in late April when Wade Miley was struggling but now they may consider him a potential replacement for the nightmare that is Joe Kelly. He'll start Thursday to stay on his regular throwing schedule and this may only be a spot start/audition, but keep an eye on him especially if there's a chance he joins the rotation. Wil Myers (wrist) is improving but not close to returning.
It's not so much that he isn't close to returning, it's that the Padres are being very cautious with him and have not set a timetable for him to start swinging a bat. Once he does start, it might not be too long before he lands on a rehab assignment. The team is hoping for an early-to-mid June return, but we'll just have to wait and see. Analysis: Howard Bender
