Fantasy Player Updates & News

Tyreke Evans being helped off the floor Friday with an apparent left ankle injury.

Reds manager Bryan Price reiterated Monday that the club does not expect Johnny Cueto (elbow) to miss more than one start.

Cueto and his manager both agreed that Cueto could have pitched Sunday if necessary, but the team erred on the side of caution with its ace. It will be necessary to see how he does in his bullpen session later in the week, and whether he gets clearance from the training staff to face the Nationals this coming weekend. Analysis: Ivar G. Eric O'Flaherty (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Monday and is expected to head out on a rehab assignment this week.

He most likely will only need a few games at the minor league level to get ready to be activated. That puts him in line to rejoin the A's bullpen staff in early June. Analysis: Ivar G. Anderson

Antonio Smith may sit out practice this week.

Smith is the subject of a child abuse investigation in Texas. The case has been dragging on for some time now, with the DA sifting through the report from the Fort Bend County Sheriff since February. Even if the case is ultimately dropped by the prosecutor, Smith could still face discipline from the league as part of its effort to improve its public image, as part of the personal conduct policy under the CBA between the players union and the league. Analysis: Ivar G. Reliever Enrique Burgos was dealing is dealing with soreness in his right shoulder. Manager Chip Hale said they're going to talk about a possible roster move.

Burgos is coming off a bad one inning stint on Sunday, where he yielded three runs (two earned) on a pair of hits. One of those safeties was three run homer by Anthony Rizzo. Of course, he did rack up three strikeouts in that appearance. It does sound as if the Diamondbacks will be looking to the minors for some bullpen assistance, possibly with Burgos heading to the DL. Analysis: Ivar G. Anderson

Chad Gaudin had carpal tunnel release surgery and could be pitching in a month.

It is not as though the Dodgers have had a stable pitching staff to open the season, thus Gaudin could be a valuable swing man if he gets back to snuff sometime soon. Of course, he has not pitched in the majors since 2013 and would settle in as a bullpen arm should he make it onto the 25-man roster this season, at least to begin. Analysis: Ivar G. Anderson

Avisail Garcia left Monday's game with a knee injury.

Garcia left after less than two innings of action on Monday. He was coming off a knee issue that held him out two games before playing again on Sunday, where he went 1-for-2 with a strikeout. A problem significant to force him from the game, occurring with the same body part that sidelined him last week is of concern, so stay tuned for an update on his situation. Analysis: Ivar G. Pedro Ciriaco will now play third base for the Braves on Monday.

Ciriaco will take over the third base position Monday night. He and Andreton Simmons will swap positions in the order, with Simmons moving up to the sixth place.  Analysis: Ivar G. Anderson

Alberto Callaspo has been scratched from the Braves starting lineup on Monday.

No word yet on what forced the last minute lineup move, but given the late decision, perhaps something took place during batting practice. Pedro Ciriaco will man the hot corner Monday night. Analysis: Ivar G. Anderson

Zach Britton pitched a clean inning with a strikeout for his 11th save this year Monday

Zach Britton continues to be rock solid in 2015 as he saved his 11th game of the season in a one run victory over Houston on Monday. With his high groundball percentage of balls in play (75.6%) and his improved strikeout rate, Britton is a top ten closer moving forward this year. After todays game, Britton has struck out 23 against only three walks with a 2.60 ERA but a 1.76 FIP.  Analysis: Greg Jewett

Josh Johnson said that he has been bothered by general soreness recently and hopes to start playing catch again later this week.

The "general soreness" forced him to miss a scheduled throwing session this past weekend. Coming off Tommy John surgery, the idea would be to take things carefully and not to rush his rehabilitation. Johnson himself is treating this a minor setback, but keep your eyes open for further news. Analysis: Ivar G. Anderson

Steve Pearce was 1-for-3 with a two run home run on Monday for Baltimore

After breaking through with a career year in 2014, Steve Pearce has struggled mightily this year. His fantasy owners have to hope todays home run is the start of a hot streak. Pearce is presently hitting .192 with a .194 BABIP which is far off of his career average of .250 with a .287 BABIP. Using the .250 as a guide, this is probably the best you can hope for this year but Pearce’s home run to fly ball ratio is in line with last year and today’s home run is his third in May.  Analysis: Greg Jewett

Caleb Joseph was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI on Monday against Houston.

With Matt Wieters starting his rehab on Tuesday in Double-A Bowie, Caleb Joseph may be relegated to backup duty soon. But since Wieters is coming back from Tommy John Surgery, his time behind the plate may be monitored. Joseph is in a career year hitting .270 with four home runs and 18 RBI this year. Joseph could be relevant as a second catcher when Wieters returns, but that will depend upon his usage.  Analysis: Greg Jewett

Wei-Yin Chen pitched five innings giving up 11 hits, three earned runs while striking out six in a no decision against Houston on Monday.

While Wei-Yin Chen was not at his best, he kept the Orioles in the game on Monday. Chen was 3-0 versus the Astros with 19 strikeouts in 19 ? innings and continued that with six more whiffs in only five innings. But there were baserunners on all day and Chen gave up 11 hits and was lifted after the fifth. Chen is a serviceable starter but his ERA is 3.13 while his FIP is 4.37 so if you believe in correction, use Chen with caution going forward.  Analysis: Greg Jewett

Jose Altuve was 2-for-4 with a run scored on Monday in Baltimore.

Coming into play on Monday, Jose Altuve was mired in a 3-for-32 slump and received the day off on Sunday. Responding to the mental day off, Altuve had two hits and scored a run on Monday and looks to get his bat going again for the Astros. Following his two hit day, Altuve is now hitting .299 with a .309 BABIP. His career BABIP is .329 so there can be an improvement in his average going forward but plan more on the .310 range for his season. Altuve has hit five home runs and stolen 14 bases to this point and is a top fantasy second base option going forward.  Analysis: Greg Jewett

Wil Myers will return to San Diego after Monday night's game to undergo scans and tests on his left wrist.

The Padres are being cautious with their young outfielder. The idea is to determine just how his wrist is healing and what sort of baseball activity he can engage in as he works his way through his DL stint. He has not swung a bat since May 17th. Analysis: Ivar G. Anderson
