Mets do not expect to move closer Bobby Parnell prior to July 31 trade deadline. According to a person with direct knowledge of the Mets’ thinking, GM Sandy Alderson considers Parnell a valuable piece for next year, rather than an opportunity to capitalize on a contender’s need.

Parnell has been solid this season, and he's under team control through the 2015 season. So if the Mets think they'll be competing before then, it could make sense to retain the right-hander. However, closers are luxuries on losing teams, so New York would do well to at least listen to offers for Parnell considering the market for late-inning relievers is projected as weak this summer.

A lot can change between now and July 31, and that is assuming this isn't just posturing to drive up Parnell's price. If Parnell is traded he will likely close for his new team, which could mean more opportunities. There seems to be little danger of him getting moved to a team where he will be relegated to a setup roll.
