If the Detroit Tigers are going to be in the trade market for a closer, they likely need an alternative to Jonathan Papelbon, the Phillies reliever who may prove too costly in terms of prospects or salary. John Axford is the "Plan B" mentioned after Papelbon by CBSSports.com writer Mike Axisa, who notes that "Axford has some blow-up potential, but when he's on, he's one of the best relievers in the game."
Axford has been highly erratic over the past two seasons, but he was solid in 2011, posting an ERA of 1.95 while compiling 46 saves. His strikeout totals are nice, but he also has had a problem with walks, similar to current Tigers closer Jose Valverde. Not sure if Axford is much of an upgrade over what Detroit currently has, but he could be an interesting addition if Milwaukee isn't looking for much in return.
