Fantasy Player Updates & News

The Chiefs have reached an agreement with Sean Smith.

Smith was one of the top corners available in free agency and the addition to the Chiefs' secondary should make the opposing QBs day a bit more difficult in fantasy leagues. ANALYST:
With the Broncos signing Welker, adding to Thomas and Decker, it makes sense to have Smith, Flowers and Robinson in your secondary. If you play IDP, Smith would be a great addition to your roster.ANALYST:

Justin Verlander will make his first rehab start on Sunday with Triple-A Toledo.

Verlander got the green light from the Tigers after Tuesday's simulated game. The Tigers were manage his pitches to only 80-85 in this rehab start and we will have to see how he feels after to know if he'll need an additional according to manager Brad Ausmus. The former Cy Young winner could be activated as soon as June 5 if he pitches and feels well on Sunday.  Analysis: Drew Phelps

Sonny Gray (ankle) is still expected to make his next start on Friday.

Sonny Gray was forced to leave Sunday's game with an ankle injury. He threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and reported no issues. It looks like all systems go for Friday's match up against the Yankees. The right-hander has a 1.77 ERA over his first 10 starts this season.  Analysis: Drew Phelps

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said he expects Jason Pierre-Paul will be at the mandatory minicamp in mid June.

It is typical of players who have had the franchise tag put on them instead of a new big contract extension to not show up for mini camps and OTAs. In JPP's case, the team hasn't even offered him a multi-year pact and remains content letting him play out his one-year, $14.8 million tender. Pierre-Paul is still just 26.  Analysis: Drew Phelps

Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles says Geno Smith will have to compete for his job, but that it's his to lose.

We heard a week ago from new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey saying that there would be no quarterback competition heading into training camp, and that Geno Smith will "probably" be the starter Week 1. Head Coach Todd Bowles came out and basically said that he has the job now but he could lose his number one spot to Ryan Fitzpatrick in training camp. Analysis: Drew Phelps

As the Dallas Cowboys begin their second day of OTA's on Wednesday, Dez Bryant not surprisingly remains working out on his own instead of at the voluntary sessions.

The Cowboys and Bryant have until July 15th to work out an extension or he will play this season under the franchise tag. You can't really blame Dallas for hesistating to pull the trigger on a big money deal for Bryant with his past off the field issues. He is more than worthy of top-three wide out money (around $40 million guaranteed) on the field. We should point out that Dez hasn't had any off-field issues since family violence charges back in the summer of 2012.  Analysis: Drew Phelps

Angels have acquired Kirk Nieuwenhuis after he was designated for assignment by the Mets.

The Mets designated Nieuwenhuis for assignment last week and New York has been working on a way to deal him elsewhere. The Mets will only receive cash considerations in return for the services of Nieuwenhuis. He is a career .230/.302/.374 hitter over parts of four seasons. Kirk does have versatility because he can play all three outfield positions.  Analysis: Drew Phelps

Greg Hardy will miss Thursday's OTA for suspension appeal.

The reports are that the newest Cowboys defensive end will get his 10 game suspension reduced significantly. The problem is, no one knows what the league is doing anymore with their penalties. Remember that the league suspended Ray Rice two games for knocking out his fiancee, and Tom Brady four games for allegedly-sorta deflating footballs. Hardy already missed 15 games on the Commissioner's Exempt List last season, which will work in the favor of his appeal. He's currently not slated to return until Week 12. Analysis: Drew Phelps

Ryan Vogelsong (calf) has been confirmed as the starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Brewers.

Vogelsong looked solid on Friday when he shut out the Rockies for six innings. That was the fourth straight quality start for Vogelsong after posting a 9.31 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances in April. He's 3-2 with a 4.60 ERA for the year. Analysis: Drew Phelps

Chad Billingsley will visit doctors on Friday to have his shoulder examined.

The hits just keep coming for Chad Billingsley, if he didn't have bad luck, he wouldn't have luck at all. The veteran right-hander has been limited to just five big league starts since the beginning of 2013 due to injury. Severino Gonzalez is taking Billingsley's spot in the rotation.  Analysis: Drew Phelps

Marcus Semien is not in the Athletics starting lineup Wednesday.

Semien is just 2-for-22 over his last six games so it looks like manager Bob Melvin is just giving him a day or rest to clear his mind. Eric Sogard will play shortstop on Wednesday. Analysis: Howard Bender

Alex Rios will play for Triple-A Omaha the next two days. The Royals will decide on Friday to activate him or not.

Rios seems ready to go in a game situation so the team will just grab a closer look at him through in-game action before finalizing his activation. If he looks good in the first game, they may not even ask him for a second rehab outing. Analysis: Howard Bender

Desmond Jennings said his knee is feeling much better.

While he says his knee feels better, Jennings still hasn't been cleared for baseball activities yet and there is no established timetable for his return. The Rays are hoping to have him back by mid-June, but that seems a bit unrealistic. Analysis: Howard Bender

Blaine Boyer will remain the eighth inning set up man when Casey Fien returns. Manager Paul Molitor said.

And that's exactly the point made in the update on Fien. Boyer will maintain his role and his fantasy value. Fien is the one who needs to work to recapture what he had. Analysis: Howard Bender

LeSean McCoy sat out OTA's Wednesday with a a minor neck injury.

There doesn't seem to be too much concern here. The workouts aren't mandatory and there's no reason to push the veteran if he's not ready to go. You only need to be concerned if this is an issue come minicamp. For now, it's not a major issue. Analysis: Howard Bender

Casey Fien (shoulder) could return Friday or Saturday.

The Twins are eager to get Fien back into his usual set-up role but may have to ease him back in, depending on how he's really feeling and what his command looks like. Expect to see him this weekend but he may start in low-leverage situations at first.  Analysis: Howard Bender
