Sean Smith is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March. If the Dolphins can't agree to a long-term deal with Smith, he might be slapped with the franchise tag, because negotiations for a new contract aren't going smoothly. Ben Volin of The Palm Beach Post cites a source to report the sides are "far apart," with Smith asking for a contract close to the six-year, $43 million pact the Tennessee Titans handed Jason McCourty last summer. The Dolphins aren't about to furnish that type of cash to Smith, according to the source.
DeAngelo Williams has rushed for only eight yards on three carries in the last two weeks since RB Le’Veon Bell has returned, but offensive coordinator Todd Haley said he would like to have Williams more involved.
Dennis Pitta (hip) has been working out, but it is not known if he will be able to play when he is eligible to be activated from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach John Harbaugh. Pitta can start participating in practice as soon as Monday, Oct. 19.
