Sean Smith is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March. If the Dolphins can't agree to a long-term deal with Smith, he might be slapped with the franchise tag, because negotiations for a new contract aren't going smoothly.
Ben Volin of The Palm Beach Post cites a source to report the sides are "far apart," with Smith asking for a contract close to the six-year, $43 million pact the Tennessee Titans handed Jason McCourty last summer. The Dolphins aren't about to furnish that type of cash to Smith, according to the source.
Rams re-signed restricted free-agent Rodney McLeod.
McLeod received the Rams' highest qualifying offer, a second-round tender worth around $2.3 million. McLeod has played in every game the past three seasons for the Rams and he will likely have a similar role this season for the team. He did a little bit of everything last year, registering 72 tackles while forcing two fumbles, recovering two and notching two interceptions. Analysis: Colby Conway
Addison Russell as began playing second base in the minors which could speed up his major league debut.
The Cubs have light hitting Jonathan Herrera currently starting at second base after Tommy La Stella landed on the DL with an oblique strain. Russell was acquired in the trade that sent Jeff Samardzija to the Athletics last season and with Javier Baez away from the team to deal with the untimely passing of his sister it looks as if Russell is the next elite prospect to be called up from the Cubs system. Russell hit .350 with 39 runs, 13 home runs, 45 RBI and six stolen bases over 68 at Double-A last season and started 2015 playing for Triple-A Iowa where he's hit .297 with a home run and seven RBI over the first nine games of the season.
