Joey Rickard Headshot

Orioles have reinstated OF Joey Rickard from the 60-day disabled list.

Added 11/04/16 3:01 pm (EST)   Source
Rickard has been out since late July after undergoing surgery on his right thumb. The thumb wasn't healing as quickly as thought before but now that he is off the DL he should be a full-go for spring training.
Kennys Vargas Headshot

Vargas is seeking a second opinion on his left foot after fouling a ball off of it Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Added 5:34 pm (EST)
Bollinger notes that Vargas was walking around the Twins clubhouse on crutches Saturday. Vargas has struggled mightily at the dish this spring with a .077/.250/.077 slash line in 13 at-bats. The timing of his injury is particularly unfortunate with roster cuts looming ahead of Opening Day. Conversely, fellow DH candidate Byungho Park has strung together an excellent .359/.422/.718 line over a larger sample of 39 at-bats this spring.
Marwin Gonzalez Headshot

Gonzalez started at shortstop Saturday after Carlos Correa was scratched due to illness.

Added 5:25 pm (EST)
Gonzalez will be the Swiss Army knife of the Astros' lineup, having played all off the positions in the infield and outfield during his career. Indeed, position versatility is his greatest fantasy asset. Whatever offense the 28-year-old provides is tempered by poor on-base ability and a high-strikeout rate. While he had 13 homers and 12 stolen bases in 2016, Houston's offseason acquisitions mean Gonzalez will be hard pressed to repeat the 141 games played and 518 plate appearances this season. In 18 spring games, he's hitting .196 (10-for-51) and has a .490 OPS.
Rafael Martin Headshot

Martin was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, MASN's Mark Zuckerman reports.

Added 5:22 pm (EST)
He was a long shot to make the 25-man roster, and he will indeed head to the minors to serve as organizational depth. Martin has a 4.50 ERA over 16 career MLB innings, most of which came in 2015. His strikeout rates have been impressive at every stop, but he appears destined for a low-leverage role if he joins the big league club at some point in 2017.
Emmanuel Burriss Headshot

Burriss was reassigned to minor league camp Saturday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN reports.

Added 5:19 pm (EST)
The veteran latched on with the Nationals on a minor league deal this winter and struggled to get on base this spring (.290 OBP) despite striking out just once in 28 at-bats. The Nationals' depth up the middle at the major league level meant that Burriss was a long shot to crack the Opening Roster when he signed. He'll head to minor league camp and will likely start the season at Triple-A
Brian Goodwin Headshot

Goodwin was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, MASN's Mark Zuckerman reports.

Added 5:18 pm (EST)
This was inevitable, as Goodwin is firmly behind Michael Taylor right now in the quest to be the Nationals' fourth outfielder. Goodwin is a quality defender, but he lacks enough offensive firepower to intrigue owners in most dynasty leagues.
Pedro Severino Headshot

Severino was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, MASN's Mark Zuckerman reports.

Added 5:15 pm (EST)
This was inevitable, as the Nationals want Severino to get regular playing time and that wasn't going to happen behind Matt Wieters. Jose Lobaton will serve as the backup, but Severino will be the first catcher summoned if either of the big league backstops suffer an injury.
Yasmany Tomas Headshot

Tomas (oblique) will get at least four at-bats in a minor league game Saturday, and if all goes well he could rejoin the big league club in a couple days, MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports.

Added 5:10 pm (EST)
He is on track to be ready for Opening Day if he avoids setbacks. Tomas is an awful defender, but that's really the only concern, as he proved last season that he can hit enough to profile in an outfield corner.
Jake Barrett Headshot

Barrett (shoulder) will not be ready for Opening Day, MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports.

Added 4:47 pm (EST)
He has been dealing with shoulder inflammation this spring and will start the year on the disabled list. Barrett is said to be progressing well, so he should return sometime early in the first half of the season. Once healthy, he should act as one of the top setup men in one of the worst bullpens in baseball.
Matt Bowman Headshot

Bowman will open the season in the Cardinals' bullpen, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.

Added 4:43 pm (EST)
He logged a 3.46 ERA in 67.2 innings out of the Cardinals' bullpen in 2016 and figures to occupy a similar low-leverage role this season.
Miguel Socolovich Headshot

Socolovich will open the season in the Cardinals' bullpen, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.

Added 4:41 pm (EST)
This was well earned by the 30-year-old righty, as he has a career 2.95 ERA over 64 innings in the majors and has pitched well this spring. He will work primarily in the middle innings.
