Rickard has been out since late July after undergoing surgery on his right thumb. The thumb wasn't healing as quickly as thought before but now that he is off the DL he should be a full-go for spring training.
Christian Arroyo Headshot

Arroyo was placed back in the Giants' Thursday lineup after Eduardo Nunez (hamstring) was scratched, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Added 12:19 pm (EST)
Arroyo was given a break as he's enduring a slump, but Nunez's hamstring injury continues to bug him, so Arroyo's day off is cut short. He'll square up against the Cubs' Eddie Butler to try to right his season (.196/.248/.313 in 121 plate appearances).
Eduardo Núñez Headshot

Nunez (hamstring) was scratched from Thursday's lineup, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Added 12:13 pm (EST)
Christian Arroyo will slide back in at third base and bat eighth. Nunez, meanwhile, will need more time to recover from his hamstring injury, which could linger for at least a few more days.
Stephen Strasburg Headshot

Strasburg will start Saturday against the Padres, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com reports.

Added 12:09 pm (EST)
The Nationals confirmed the right-hander's specific assignment for the weekend against the lowly Padres. Strasburg will match up with San Diego southpaw Clayton Richard.
Eduardo Núñez Headshot

Nunez (hamstring) is back in the Giants' lineup Thursday, batting sixth and playing third base, Alec Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Added 12:07 pm (EST)
It's good news for Nunez, who's back in action after he tweaked his hamstring Wednesday. The versatile glove slides over to third base to spell the struggling Christian Arroyo. Nunez has delivered an acceptable follow-up to his breakout 2016 with a .277/.298/.370 performance with two home runs and 12 stolen bases over 45 games.
Justin Ruggiano Headshot

Ruggiano is batting seventh and playing right field Thursday, Alec Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Added 12:04 pm (EST)
Ruggiano sneaks in a start with Christian Arroyo resting against the Cubs right-hander Eddie Butler. This year, Ruggiano has typically hit lefties (.308/.357/.308) better than righties (.214/233/.464) in his short 2017 sample size, which just about corresponds to his career trends.
Christian Arroyo Headshot

Arroyo is not in the Giants' lineup Thursday, Alec Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Added 12:01 pm (EST)
The infielder gets a break during the day game. Arroyo is hitting a paltry .196/.248/.313 line with thee home runs in 121 plate appearances. Eduardo Nunez takes his place at third base, and Justin Ruggiano joins the lineup in right field.
Seth Lugo Headshot

Lugo (elbow) is expected to make at least one more start in the minors before being activated from the 10-day disabled list, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Added 11:59 am (EST)
The Mets had been hopeful that one of Lugo or Steven Matz (elbow) would be able to return from the disabled list over the weekend to assume the rotation spot previously occupied by Tommy Milone (knee), but it appears that's no longer a consideration for the organization after both pitchers labored through rehab outings Tuesday. Making his second start with High-A St. Lucie, Lugo surrendered seven runs (six earned) over just three innings to put a damper on the Mets' enthusiasm about bringing him up to the big club. Matz seems more likely of the two pitchers to be activated from the DL first, but there could be room for both hurlers in the rotation. In addition to the unsettled fifth starter spot created by Milone's move to the DL, Robert Gsellman, who has turned in a 6.45 ERA and 1.66 WHIP over 44.2 innings this season, seems to be hanging on to a rotation spot by a thread.
Taylor Rogers Headshot

Rogers pitched the eighth inning and struck out two in Wednesday's win over Baltimore for his 12th hold of the season.

Added 11:53 am (EST)
Rogers was able to pitch around a leadoff single and an error by second baseman Brian Dozier to record a scoreless inning. The 12 holds now leads the AL, but seven of those holds have come from outings where the southpaw pitched less than one inning. The Twins have continued to use Rogers in situational opportunities, and until the time comes when they trust him to handle a full inning more consistently, it seems he will remain a lefty specialist out of the pen.
Francisco Cervelli Headshot

Cervelli is back in the Pirates' lineup Thursday, sitting behind the plate and batting fifth.

Added 11:53 am (EST)
Cervelli received a routine day off Wednesday and replaces Chris Stewart for the Thursday matinee. Cervelli could improve on his .236 clip this year against Colon, who carries a 6.38 ERA in 2017.
Ichiro Suzuki Headshot

Suzuki failed to reach base in three plate appearances Wednesday against interleague opponent Oakland.

Added 11:51 am (EST)
Suzuki started in centerfield for just his eighth start of the season, one day after starting and splitting time between left and center Tuesday. Despite making two consecutive starts, Father Time seems to have caught up to Suzuki and will most likely prevent him from any meaningful or consistent playing time in a crowded outfield that consists of young stars Christian Yelich and Giancarlo Stanton.
