We now have a better idea why Ryan Mathews finished both his playoff games this month as a spectator. U-T San Diego reported Monday that the San Diego Chargers running back was attempting to play through a high ankle sprain. The injury typically comes with a recovery timetable of four to six weeks. Mathews didn't miss one. "It was tough," Mathews said Monday. "I wanted to be out there every play just to help them."

Chargers expect RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) to play vs. the Broncos.

Despite not practicing all week, the Chargers expected to have Mathews on the field for today's game against the Broncos. Considering he is not 100 percent, expect both Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown to get extended work in the Chargers rushing game.

Ryan Mathews (ankle) hasn't participated in practice all week. His official status for Sunday's game vs the Broncos will come after practice.

I am still expecting Mathews to play but to also be very limited. Danny Woodhead is an outstanding play this week in daily fantasy leagues.

Ryan Mathews (ankle) is not practicing on Wednesday.

Mathews has been dealing with the same ankle sprain for nearly a month now and surprisingly has played through it. The Chargers are going to need all hands on deck this week as they try and slay the dragon known as Peyton Manning.

No injury announcement on Ryan Mathews from Chargers. Assumption is it's his ankle. He hasn't touched ball since early third quarter.

Mathews was obviously hurt once again. He can't ever be trusted on your team. This is at least the 4th time he left a game early this season.
