Chase Blackburn (back) got good news on an MRI on Thursday, but won't play Sunday.

It would appear that Blackburn's back problems are not as serious as originally surmised and while he won't play Sunday, it looks like the Panthers could have him back at practice much sooner than they expected.

Aaron Dobson (foot) is on the field Monday at practice. Very positive news for him in terms of being ready for Week 1.

After surgery to repair his left foot this past offseason resulted in a permanent screw being inserted, the Patriots were unsure if Dobson would be ready for Week 1. Now that he is back on the practice field he will have to get back to 100 percent before being labeled ready for the season opener, but this is at least a big step in the right direction for the team's second year wideout.

Giants receiver Jerrel Jernigan missed practice Wednesday due to a knee injury, the New York Daily News reports. There's no indication how long the issue is expected to sideline Jernigan.

Jernigan was seen wearing a wrap on his right lower leg during Wednesday's practice, but the team has yet to release the extent of the injury. Outside of extremely deep leagues, Jernigan should not be on anyone's radar despite the Giants now running a west coast style offense.

Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers have agreed to put off extension talks until after the 2014 season.

It seems as though both parties want to focus on the season at hand, which is likely a wise idea. Harbaugh has rejuvenated a franchise that mettled in mediocrity for several years, so it is highly likely that they will extend him sometime before next season.

Matt Schaub has been extremely sharp in padded practices this week, according to plugged-in beat writer Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group.

Schaub has always had the skills to succeed and we've all known him to be more than capable. His overall performance recently has been disrupted by injuries and he has struggled to get back on track. The change of scenery with the move to Oakland should help him get back on the right path, but the question remains as to whether or not he can sustain it.

Packers signed GM Ted Thompson to a multi-year extension.

This is a good move for the Packers as he has done a terrific job moving the team forward through the Brett Favre era in Green Bay. The team is in a good place and he deserved to be compensated for his work on putting together a competitive team year in and year out.

Henry Melton will be cleared to take part in the first practice of training camp, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Melton is expected to be a starting defensive tackle for the Cowboys in 2014 as long as his health holds up. Over his six year career, Melton has totaled 89 tackles and 15.5 sacks all coming with the Bears between 2010-2013.

Giants named former WR David Tyree their director of player development.

Tyree is best known for his catch in Super Bowl 42 that ultimately kept the Giants alive. He is well known within the organization and should fit in quite well to an atmosphere he is familiar with.

Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer has been suspended three games by the team for making offensive and insensitive homophobic remarks in the presence of former P Chris Kluwe.

If Priefer completes the team mandated counselling, he could have a game lopped off the unpaid suspension. This is coming out as a result of Kluwe alleging that the Vikings cut him for reasons other than his performance on the field. That story will continue to go on so long as the case proceeds through the court system.

With Sean Lee expected to miss the season with a torn ACL, the Dallas Morning News projects Justin Durant as the Cowboys' starting middle linebacker.

The Cowboys did go out and trade for former first-round pick Rolando McClain, but he doesn't look to be the guy to replace Sean Lee at middle linebacker. McClain could make a play for the job in training camp being his natural position but right now Justin Durant is in line to take that spot. He will have to work hard in training camp to get comfortable with playing the mic linebacker position.
