Henry Melton will be cleared to take part in the first practice of training camp, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Melton is expected to be a starting defensive tackle for the Cowboys in 2014 as long as his health holds up. Over his six year career, Melton has totaled 89 tackles and 15.5 sacks all coming with the Bears between 2010-2013.

Giants named former WR David Tyree their director of player development.

Tyree is best known for his catch in Super Bowl 42 that ultimately kept the Giants alive. He is well known within the organization and should fit in quite well to an atmosphere he is familiar with.

Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer has been suspended three games by the team for making offensive and insensitive homophobic remarks in the presence of former P Chris Kluwe.

If Priefer completes the team mandated counselling, he could have a game lopped off the unpaid suspension. This is coming out as a result of Kluwe alleging that the Vikings cut him for reasons other than his performance on the field. That story will continue to go on so long as the case proceeds through the court system.

With Sean Lee expected to miss the season with a torn ACL, the Dallas Morning News projects Justin Durant as the Cowboys' starting middle linebacker.

The Cowboys did go out and trade for former first-round pick Rolando McClain, but he doesn't look to be the guy to replace Sean Lee at middle linebacker. McClain could make a play for the job in training camp being his natural position but right now Justin Durant is in line to take that spot. He will have to work hard in training camp to get comfortable with playing the mic linebacker position.

Jets receiver Stephen Hill drew strong reviews for his work in minicamp. But the New York Daily News insists the Jets could be ready to cut bait on their 2012 second rounder who has had two miserable seasons, especially if he can't stay healthy in the preseason.

Stephen Hill has everything you want from the wide receiver position. He has the ideal size, the speed and the strength but his hands have been less than desirable. The athlete that Hill is expects to look good in non-contact practice, and he did not drop a ball in mini-camp earlier this summer. Hill is the most physically gifted receiver on the Jets' roster, but he will have to produce to keep his job in their wide receiver core.

DEA is investigating prescription drug abuse in NFL locker rooms.

And why shouldn't they? If the concussion issues or unusually high suicide rate can't shut down the NFL, maybe the feds can give it a try, huh? This has the potential of being a real ugly situation.

Packers president Mark Murphy said the team considers signing general manager Ted Thompson to a contract extension as one of their top priorities.

This comes as no surprise. The Packers have reached the playoffs in each of the past five seasons, including a Super Bowl win in 2010. Thompson is currently signed through 2016, but you can expect him to receive an extension before his deal is up.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said he is trying to extend the contract of K Justin Tucker.

Tucker converted 38-of-41 field-goal attempts and 26-of-26 extra-point attempts in 2013. He was as close to automatic as you can get with regard to a kicker, so of course, they want to extend him.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said he is trying to extend the contract of CB Jimmy Smith.

Smith put up a solid season last year as he recorded 58 tackles (49 solo), two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and 16 pass defenses. He's been incredibly consistent since first joining the Ravens in the 2011 draft and Newsome would certainly be wise to try and keep him around longer.

That's just a shame and real sad news to report. We wish nothing but the best to David and the entire Quessenberry family during the troubling times.
