2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: Murphy hit eight home runs with 12 doubles and a .290/.335/.538 slash line across 47 games last year. He missed time last year with a thumb sprain and even if he was healthy, Cal Raleigh dominated the playing time behind the dish for Seattle. In San Fran, Patrick Bailey is the main source of competition, and Bailey's second half slide could prompt the Giants to use Murphy more often to add some pop behind the dish.

2024 Outlook: Bailey is a far better defender than Murphy, which doesn't matter for fantasy, but it matters a hell of a lot in reality. It's not a great hitter's environment, but we've seen Murphy run red hot in spurts, highlighted by his 18 home runs and .535 SLG back in 2019. Yes, that was a few years ago, but even last year, eight home runs across 47 games is a 20+ homer pace over a full season. If Murphy were to win the job out of spring training, he could be an intriguing sleeper behind the dish.
