Angels release P Mark Mulder, whose comeback was cut short by Achilles surgery.

Mulder's comeback tragically ended before it even began, kind of like what happened to The Backstreet Boys when they tried to make a comeback.

Mark Mulder will undergo surgery on his left Achilles on February 25.

Bad news for Mulder, as this will most likely cost him the season. Bad news for the Angels, too, as their already shaky back of the rotation gets even thinner. Thus ends the best comeback story of the spring so far, with Mulder returning to pitching after a 6 year retirement.

Mark Mulder left Angels camp on Saturday in order to have an x-ray performed on his ankle, MLB.com reports.

Mulder wasn't assured a spot in the Angels' rotation, but his return to baseball with altered mechanics is now in jeopardy. At least this isn't a recurrence of his prior shoulder woes.

Mark Mulder was slated to throw off a mound today, but hurt his ankle going through warmups.

The injury doesn't appear to be serious, but he'll likely need a few days of rest before he steps onto the mound. He's still a longshot to make the team out of spring training, considering the depth of the Cardinals rotation and bullpen.
