Jeff Samardzija and Cubs arbitration hearing is scheduled for Monday.

The Shark has a big arm, he's a K per inning type of fella, but he's failed to win games or produce impressive ratios the past two years. A converted reliever, Samardzija will likely be one of the cheapest options in fantasy with the potential to strike out 200 batters, and at some point in every draft you should look his way (he's an SP3/4 type).

The Cubs have said they do not plan on shutting down Jeff Samardzija early this season, but will give him an extra day of rest before each of his next two outings, (his final start of the season will be on regular rest in St. Louis).

The Shark has already thrown 20 more innings than his career high of 174.2 he pitched last season and is fourth among National League starters in in pitches thrown with 3,167. Samardzija has allowed five or more runs in each of his last three starts, (17 runs in last 18.1 innings pitched for an ERA of 8.35), and has served up five home runs over that span.

Jeff Samardzija got lit up Thursday allowing nine earned runs on 11 hits, no walks, and struck out three over just 3.1 innings in the 12-1 loss to the Phillies.

Samardzija (6-11) has been more of a flounder than a shark of late as he has struggled in his last seven starts posting a 1-4 record with a 6.75 ERA and has now allowed nine earned runs in two of his last six starts. You may consider spot starting him until he regains your confidence.

Jeff Samardzija pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in the no-decision Monday. Samardzija was 1-2 with a 6.85 ERA in his four previous July starts.

Samardzija posses elite-tier strikeout ability and remains a must start each and every time out there. Though his bullpen let him down today, Sama will look to get back on track in his next outing versus the Dodgers.
